Education Support Worker

(Full Time Regular Position)

 

Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) has employment opportunities for one full time Education Support Worker.  The Education Support Worker will support student development by contributing to the students’ educational, social and developmental curriculum and participating in its delivery as a member of a co-ordinated team.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Design and develop programming that will support the engagement of high-risk youth who are using substances and disconnected from the community in one-to-one supports or small group programs
  • Create, in conjunction with other members of staff, a caring, safe, and acceptable atmosphere in which growth and independence are fostered by the maintenance of a supportive and positive role
  • Provide a continuity and consistency of support, thereby facilitating the student’s access to and progress in any educational, social, therapy or developmental programmes that are being applied
  • Undertake specific tasks with individuals or groups as directed by the direct supervisor or other staff members
  • Ensure all relevant information relating to the students (e.g. concerning behaviour, personal development, medical incidents etc.) is relayed to appropriate staff members
  • Follow and act upon Behaviour Management guidelines, advice, and programmes in line with the philosophy of positive reinforcement and Behaviour Management
  • Provide students with encouragement, reassurance and comfort, and when necessary, to help in the management of those students who may be aggressive, distressed or disruptive, in accordance with skills and training
  • Support at all times the long-term aim for student independence by encouraging the growth of these skills 
  • Lead and participate in various recreational, educational and social activities and to accompany students either to other areas of the site or off site for scheduled meetings or activities
  • Supervise students during breaktimes
  • Support students during class time in our high school 
  • Transport students to various locations (appointments, etc)
  • Actively work and participate in the after-school care program, homework club, teen program, spring break, and summer break program 
  • Liaise with other staff regarding the students` behaviour and development
  • Attend meetings, in conjunction, with both educational, care, therapy and medical staff concerning students and to complete any relevant paperwork for these meetings
  • Assist with assessing, planning and reviewing student progress
  • Ensure any necessary administration (photocopying etc.) is completed and that supplies of consumable items are maintained at an appropriate
  • Undertake any activities as may be required to ensure the safe and effective running of any assigned working area in compliance with Health & Safety regulations
  • Liaise with parents in an informal manner
  • Support and encourage parents/guardians to be active in their child’s educational journey

 

Working Conditions

  • Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Occasional evenings and flexibility as required. 40 hours per week. Work during spring break and summer as well as pro-D days
  • There will be flexibility required for the position and the hours and days of work may change to meet operational needs or the health and wellness needs of the youth and community

 

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Diploma in Special Education or similar is considered as asset
  • Experience working with at-risk youth and children with special learning and behavioural needs
  • Previous work experience working with children and youth
  • Experience with leading recreational, educational and social activities with children and youth 
  • Knowledge of young people who have complex and multiple learning abilities and challenging behaviour
  • Ability to provide consistency of care and support to all students
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with a children and youth 6 to 25 years old
  • Take direction from supervisors
  • Work effectively independently or in a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Sound organisational and time management skills
  • Prioritise and respond to differing demands as required
  • Completion of a satisfactory criminal record check
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Valid drivers licence

Wages/Benefits

Pay scale for this position is $31.31 - $35.22 per hour with excellent benefits including enrolment in the BC Municipal Pension Plan. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience & internal equity.
