The RDOS is currently recruiting for a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist to join the Protective Services department at the RDOS. This role is responsible for supporting the Lead Wildfire Mitigation Specialist in developing and implementing wildfire mitigation activities in accordance with provincial guidelines and the direction of the RDOS.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Delivers the FireSmart Wildfire Mitigation Program and Community FireSmart Recognition Program to residents as directed.
- Schedules education sessions and consultations with the aim of identifying and making recommendations to support community and resident FireSmart readiness.
- Prepares public awareness campaigns including preparation and delivery of presentations on wildfire prevention/mitigation program, FireSmart BC Wildfire Mitigation Program and FireSmart Community Recognition Program to community groups and partners as directed.
- Assists with planning, logistics and presentations for FireSmart sponsored workshops, events and courses.
- Uses a variety of hand tools and small equipment for the purpose of supporting removal of plant debris material from properties.
- Provides advice on emerging issues, trends and best practices in wildfire prevention and mitigation and acts as a resource for wildfire mitigation information at a variety of meetings and presentations with partners.
- Compiles and analyzes data for annual reports and budgets.
- Serves on or supports the emergency response team as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
- Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Certification.
- Extensive knowledge of wildfire, wildfire behaviour, and the FireSmart Program.
- Experience working within a Municipal or Volunteer Fire Department is considered an asset.
- General knowledge of emergency management principles, event coordination, forestry, landscaping and building construction principles.
- Ability to be courteous and diplomatic in dealing with the public and co-workers.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience in developing, preparing and delivering presentations.
- Experience using brush and chainsaws and other motorized equipment, including experience towing trailers.
- Ability to work flexible work hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
- Valid First Aid Certificate or an ability to obtain.
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence.
This temporary, full-time position, located in Osoyoos is included in the RDOS BCGEU bargaining unit. The hourly wage for the position is $34.42 and increases to $34.59 July 1st, 2026, plus 15% in lieu of all benefits and pension.
