Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area over 10,400 km2 and is renowned for its orchards, vineyards and golf courses, as well as its widely varied landscape including deserts, mountains and valleys, pristine lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is currently recruiting for a casual Heavy Equipment Operator I to join the Public Works team.
The Heavy Equipment Operator I position is responsible for performing a variety of routine tasks related to the safe operation and maintenance of heavy mobile equipment of a complex nature according to industry competency standards, safety practices and regulations for the purposes of solid waste management operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operates heavy equipment of a complex nature including, but not limited to refuse compactors, frontend loaders with various attachments, tracked bulldozers, grinders, shredders, screeners, tandem dump trucks, water tender trucks and related power equipment as required.
- Performs routine inspections and conducts regular maintenance to ensure related equipment, vehicles, machinery, disposal areas, access roads and buildings are consistently maintained and safe for public access.
- Performs regular safety checks on equipment and recommends equipment repairs and acquisition of equipment and supplies to senior staff as required.
- Promotes safety practices in the workplace, adheres to safe work procedures and participates in safety meetings.
- Uses a variety of hand tools and small equipment for routine maintenance and changing of attachments.
- Manages organics stockpiles for fire mitigation, as well as composting requirements, operations and provides on-site documentation including sampling data when required.
- Records data during operational and maintenance activities.
- Reports on material and supply inventory status to senior staff, orders supplies, and purchases items as approved.
- Responds tactfully to on-site public inquiries regarding landfill operations and redirects as required.
- Educates and enforces solid waste-related policies, bylaws, and regulations and informs branch manager of violations.
- Inspects customer loads, whenever possible, before they are unloaded to support the segregation of recyclable materials.
- Provides operational support to other landfill staff, contractors, fire personnel and the public as required.
- Review and provide input to landfill related procedures, policies and documents as required.
- Responds to on-site emergencies as required.
- Responsible as point person at the facility in the absence of senior department staff.
- Serves on or supports the emergency response team as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
- A minimum of three (3) years of heavy equipment operation experience in an industrial, commercial, agricultural system or facility. Preference will be given to operators with excavator experience.
- Landfill Operations Basics Certification or the ability to obtain.
- Compost Facility Operator Certification or the ability to obtain.
- Knowledge of relevant policies, bylaws, procedures, safety methods and occupational hazards in the heavy equipment operation environment.
- Ability to work on a number of concurrent tasks with deadline pressures.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision.
- Ability to work flexible work hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work in the presence of all types of weather conditions.
- Ability to read maps, plans and prepare sketches for disposal plans.
- Ability to communicate in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Ability to operate mechanical tools and equipment used in the operations, maintenance, installation, and repair of solid waste related works.
- Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
- Valid First Aid Certificate.
- Valid Class 3 with air brake endorsement and 5 B.C. Driver’s Licences.
This casual position is included in the BCGEU bargaining unit. The hourly wage for the position is paygrade 5 $38.71, plus 15% in lieu of all benefits.
