Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area over 10,400 km and is renowned for its orchards, vineyards and golf courses, as well as its widely varied landscape including deserts, mountains and valleys, pristine lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is currently recruiting for a regular, full-time Engineering Technologist I to join the Public Works team. The Engineering Technologist I position is responsible for providing engineering technical services to support the achievement of project and program objectives in support of the organization’s strategic priorities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Produces complex correspondence, reports, contracts, agreements, briefing notes, advertising, public notifications, and spreadsheets potentially within short timeframes.
- Develops documents, evaluates and recommends results for the procurement of engineering design and/or construction projects.
- Manages all phases of assigned projects including setting and adapting scope, cost control, designs, construction, commissioning, and completion.
- Identifies project risks and develops risk mitigation strategies and/or risk controls.
- Reviews engineering drawings and all work provided by consultants for water and sewer utilities, solid waste projects, transit, and other infrastructure on assigned projects.
- Provides work direction to contracted resources, monitors delivery of services in relation to contract terms, resolves routine problems and escalates non-compliance issues.
- Provides financial information for input into annual capital and operating budgets on current and future projects.
- Applies for and coordinates all documentation related to grant opportunities.
- Checks to determine appropriate engineering service requirements and verifies compliance with standards and specifications during and on completion of works.
- Determines if development applications meet standards and guidelines.
- Reviews and recommends approval of progress payment for expenditures by contractors and consulting engineers.
- Ensures as-built drawings and reports are complete and filed on relevant information storage.
- Prepares drawings for simple in-house design projects.
- Prepares and updates statistical data and annual reports.
- Provides assistance to senior staff in reviewing policies and strategic planning for infrastructure.
- Prepares and delivers presentations to stakeholders and acts as a resource at meetings for technical support and provides project information.
- Provides assistance to other departments concerning infrastructure and development as requested.
- Serves on or supports the Emergency Response Team as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two-year diploma in engineering technology in a civil related program.
- Member of, or eligible for full membership in the Applied Science Technologist and Technologists Association of British Columbia (ASTTBC).
- A minimum of one (1) year experience in engineering design, inspection, construction, and/or project management. An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
- Knowledge of infrastructure project management is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of government legislation and regulations such as the Local Government Act.
- Ability to work on several concurrent tasks with deadline pressures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to plan, implement and monitor projects.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
- Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and drawing software (e.g. AutoCAD).
- Water modelling software experience is considered an asset.
- Valid BC Driver’s licence.
This regular, full-time position is included in the BCGEU bargaining unit. The hourly wage for the position is $44.64, plus a $2.00/hour adjustment for recruitment/retention purposes. This full-time role also comes with an attractive benefits package, as well as a flexible schedule that permits a reduced workweek.
