Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area over 10,400 km and is renowned for its orchards, vineyards and golf courses, as well as its widely varied landscape including deserts, mountains and valleys, pristine lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is currently recruiting for a regular, full-time Systems Operator II (Water). Reporting to the Water Utilities Foreman (or Sub-Foreman as directed), the Systems Operator II will contribute to the efficient and effective operation of the water and wastewater operations by performing a variety of operations and maintenance duties. These duties will primarily be associated with Lakeshore Waterworks and Skaha Estates.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carries out operations, maintenance, and required checks for the water and wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, collection systems, and distribution infrastructure.
  • Performs regular maintenance to ensure related equipment, vehicles, machinery, grounds and buildings are maintained.
  • Monitors and adjusts wastewater treatment processes as directed.
  • Assists senior operators with installation and repair of sewer and water mains, service connections and related components.
  • Monitors on-site water disinfection processes, backflow prevention and completes other hygiene maintenance at water and wastewater facilities as directed.
  • Records data during operational and maintenance activities.
  • Monitors SCADA system for operations, alarms and relaying information.
  • Reports material and supply inventory status to senior operator, orders for restocking, and picks up items, as required.
  • Wastewater specific functions include sampling and working with process chemicals.
  • Uses a variety of small equipment and tools.
  • Addresses public complaints and concerns about water and wastewater facilities as required.
  • Completes weekend wastewater and water system checks on a rotational basis.
  • Participates in standby activities for the wastewater and water systems.
  • Responsible as point person at the facility in the absence of the onsite senior water/wastewater operator.
  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent, plus EOCP Water Distribution Operator Level  II
  • Chlorine Handling certificate.
  • The following certifications are considered assets:
        • EOCP Municipal Wastewater Treatment Operator Level  I
        • EOCP Wastewater Collection Operator Level  I
        • EOCP Water Treatment Operator Level  I
        • Instrumentation/SCADA programming and troubleshooting skills
        • Certificate of Training for Transport of Dangerous Goods 
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Class II or higher system/facility.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies, bylaws, procedures, safety methods and occupational hazards in the water operations and maintenance environment.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel). 
  • Ability to work on a number of concurrent tasks with deadline pressures. 
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work flexible work hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work in the presence of all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to read blueprints and plans and prepare sketches.
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Ability to operate mechanical tools and equipment used in the operations, maintenance, installation, and repair of water and wastewater system works including precision work with small tolerances for error.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate or an ability obtain.
  • Valid B.C. Driver’s Licence.

This regular, full-time position is included in the BCGEU bargaining unit.  The hourly wage for the position is $37.40, Paygrade 5. This position also comes with an attractive benefits package, as well as a flexible schedule that permits a reduced workweek.
