TREATY EDUCATION AND NATION ENGAGMENT SPECIALIST
Full time One Year Contract (with strong possibility of extension)
POSITION SUMMARY
The Treaty Education and Nation Engagement Specialist is responsible for coordinating, developing, and delivering treaty education and engagement initiatives on behalf of Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN). This role plays a central part in sharing TFN’s 15 years of modern treaty implementation experience to support broader understanding of modern treaties across Canada.
The Specialist will lead nation‑to‑nation gatherings, coordinate TFN participation in inter‑nation learning and sharing sessions, and develop accessible Treaty 101 education materials for Indigenous and non‑Indigenous audiences. This position also supports internal capacity‑building to ensure TFN remains a leader in treaty education, literacy, and engagement over the long term.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordination & Nation Engagement
- Plan, organize, and host regular nation‑to‑nation gatherings at TFN (up to one per month).
- Coordinate TFN delegations travelling to other Indigenous Nations for treaty sharing and implementation support.
- Develop agendas, briefing materials, presentations, and follow‑up reports for all gatherings and engagements.
- Support TFN participation in treaty awareness events, conferences, and presentations in Ottawa and other regions.
Treaty Education & Materials Development
- Develop Treaty 101 education and literacy tools, including curriculum, print, and digital resources.
- Adapt materials for use in schools, communities, public education forums, and intergovernmental settings.
- Ensure all materials are accessible, culturally appropriate, and available in English and French.
- Work collaboratively with communications, design, and language teams as needed.
Community & Public Outreach
- Design and deliver workshops and presentations for TFN Members, partner Nations, governments, and the general public.
- Support TFN’s presence at conferences, learning events, and public forums that advance understanding of modern treaties.
- Build and maintain relationships with partner Nations, institutions, and governments.
Reporting & Accountability
- Track activities, deliverables, and expenditures related to CIRNAC‑funded initiatives.
- Contribute to interim and final project reports, including evaluation of outcomes.
- Maintain a centralized archive of treaty education resources, materials, and session records.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Required
- Strong knowledge of Indigenous governance and modern treaties, gained through lived experience, professional work, or academic study.
- Demonstrated experience developing and delivering educational materials or public‑facing content.
- Strong facilitation, communication, and relationship‑building skills.
- Excellent organizational and project management abilities, with capacity to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with Indigenous governments, federal partners, and community members.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as:
- Indigenous Studies
- Indigenous Governance
- Political Science
- Public Administration
- Law (pre‑law, legal studies, or justice studies)
- Education or Curriculum Studies
- Anthropology, Sociology, or related social sciences
Considered an Asset
- Graduate‑level coursework or degree (Master’s) in:
- Indigenous Governance or Indigenous Studies
- Public Policy or Public Administration
- Education (particularly adult education or curriculum development)
- Law or legal studies related to Indigenous or constitutional law
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30
- Work is performed primarily indoors in an office environment
- Hybrid work arrangement may be possible for at least part of the time
- Off-site travel may be required occasionally to attend meetings, committees, conferences, and training events
COMPENSATION
- $41.03 to $47.94 per hour (e.g. $80,000 – $93,475 per annum). Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience and internal equity

- BC Municipal Pension Plan – employee contributes 8.61%, employer contributes 9.31%
