Part-Time Recreation and Program Leader (with benefits eligibility)

 

Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) is seeking skilled and energetic Part-Time Recreation Program Leader(s) with strong physical literacy competencies, coaching experience, and relevant sport/fitness certifications. This role supports the delivery of high-quality recreation programs for youth, adults, and elders, with a focus on developing physical skills, promoting active lifestyles, and ensuring safe and inclusive participation. Programs include sport coaching, fitness leadership, weight room supervision, active play, arts and crafts, and general recreation programming across TFN facilities.

 

Direct Report:
Reports to the Recreation & Elders Supervisor

 

Key Responsibilities:

Physical Literacy & Active Program Leadership:

• Lead developmentally appropriate physical literacy programs that build confidence, motivation, and fundamental movement skills across all ages.
• Plan and deliver active recreation sessions that support long-term athlete development principles.
• Modify or adapt activities to ensure inclusion and accessibility for all participants.

Sport Coaching & Skill Development:

• Coach youth and/or adult sport programs in a safe, supportive, and skill-focused manner.
• Deliver sport-specific drills, warm-ups, cool-downs, and skill progressions appropriate to participants’ ages and abilities.
• Provide constructive feedback, demonstrate proper techniques, and model positive sport values such as teamwork, respect, and perseverance.
• Help coordinate practices, scrimmages, and informal recreational leagues or tournaments.
• Ensure all coaching activities reflect NCCP standards and safe sport practices.

 Fitness Leadership & Weight Room Supervision:

• Lead group fitness sessions (within certification scope), such as circuit training, strength sessions, or functional movement classes.
• Supervise the weight room, ensuring safe and effective use of equipment by participants of various experience levels.
• Provide basic instruction on resistance training, stretching, mobility, and injury prevention.
• Conduct basic equipment checks and uphold facility cleanliness and safety.

Program Support & Administration:

• Set up equipment, prepare program materials, and ensure recreation spaces are safe and ready for use.
• Assist with program planning, session outlines, and seasonal calendars.
• Maintain attendance records, incident reports, and coaching notes when needed.
• Provide recommendations to improve sport and physical literacy programming.

Community Engagement:

• Build positive, professional relationships with youth, adults, and elders to encourage participation and ensure a welcoming environment.
• Support TFN community events, tournaments, cultural gatherings, and wellness initiatives.

Safety Leadership:

• Follow and enforce all safety protocols, emergency procedures, and risk management practices related to sport and fitness.
• Ensure consistent safe sport practices, including appropriate supervision, boundaries, and participant wellbeing.

Sport, Movement, & Fitness Programs:
• Support and deliver programs that build physical literacy, sport skill development, and active living across the lifespan.
• Facilitate active games, sport workshops, and practice sessions tailored to community needs.

Cultural, Creative & Intergenerational Activities:
• Assist with arts and crafts, cultural activities, and programs that strengthen community connections.
• Support intergenerational programming that brings together youth, adults, and elders.

 

Required Experience & Skills:
• Demonstrated coaching experience in sport, recreation, or physical education settings.
• Strong foundation in physical literacy, movement development, or long-term athlete development.
• Experience working with diverse age groups and adapting programs to different skill levels.
• Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and engage participants.

 

Certifications (required or willingness to obtain):
• Standard First Aid & CPR-C
• HIGH FIVE® or equivalent child/youth recreation certification
• NCCP coaching certifications (multi-sport or sport-specific) – strong asset
• NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills or equivalent physical literacy certificate
• Fitness certifications such as BCRPA Fitness Leader, CanFitPro, or Group Fitness Instructor – asset
• Experience supervising a fitness or weight room environment – asset

 

Additional Assets:
• Knowledge of Tsawwassen First Nation Government and cultural context.
• Experience working in Indigenous communities or with diverse populations.
• Ability to design and run age-appropriate warm-ups, practices, and fitness sessions.

 

Work Schedule:
• Part-time hours; varies based on programming needs
• Evening and weekend availability required

 

Primary Work Location:
Work will occur across TFN Lands and offsite locations for specific programs and camps.

 

COMPENSATION

  • $25.79 - $30.62 hour. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience and internal equity
  • Annual cost of living increases
  • BC Municipal Pension Plan – employee contributes 8.61%, employer contributes 9.31%
