Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) is a proud Coast Salish nation with our land base situated in Tsawwassen, B.C. In 2009, the Tsawwassen First Nation Final Agreement came into effect. This treaty was the first modern urban treaty in BC and the first treaty to be successfully negotiated through the BC Treaty Commission process. The Treaty provides TFN with municipal, provincial and federal types of jurisdiction over a land base of 724 hectares.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Dishwasher/Prep-Cook is an essential member of the Tsawwassen First Nation Food Service Team, supporting high-quality meal preparation and ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming kitchen environment for Elders, Youth, staff, and community programs. Reporting to the Head Chef/Sous Chef & Food Services Manager, this role combines strong dishwashing skills with the ability to efficiently prep ingredients and assist in cooking and assembling meals under the direction of the food service leadership team.
This position requires flexibility to support a wide range of TFN programming, community events, Elders lunches, workshops, and catering needs. Evening, weekend, and variable shift work may be required depending on the schedule of events.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Dishwashing & Sanitation
- Operate and maintain commercial dishwashing equipment in accordance with Food Safe standards.
- Wash, sanitize, and properly store all dishes, utensils, cookware, and service items.
- Maintain a clean and organized dishwashing area at all times.
- Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules across the kitchen.
- Properly handle waste, compost, and recycling following TFN protocols.
- Ensure all surfaces, floors, and equipment are cleaned and sanitized as required.
Food Preparation
- Assist with prep tasks including chopping, slicing, portioning, mixing, marinating, and assembling ingredients.
- Follow recipes, portion controls, and presentation standards set by food service leadership.
- Assist with receiving and organizing food orders and managing inventory rotation (FIFO).
- Communicate any shortages or quality concerns to the kitchen leadership.
Cooking & Meal Assembly
- Support cooking tasks such as preparing simple hot items, reheating, and assembling dishes.
- Assist in plating and packaging meals for dine-in and take-out service.
- Help maintain consistent food quality, taste, and presentation.
- Follow all safety and hygiene practices while working with knives, equipment, and hot surfaces.
Team Support
- Work collaboratively with the Head Chef, Sous Chef, Cook, and the broader Recreation & Events team.
- Support food service needs at events, programs, Elders Centre activities, and community gatherings.
- Adapt to changing schedules and priorities as program needs shift.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully within a diverse team environment.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Education & Certification
- FoodSafe Level 1 required (or willingness to obtain within first 30 days).
Experience
- Minimum 1 year experience in a commercial kitchen or high-volume dishwashing role.
- Previous prep-cook or kitchen assistant experience preferred.
- Experience working in Indigenous communities or with Elders is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong time-management skills and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to follow instructions and work under the direction of kitchen leadership.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work flexible or variable schedules.
- Physically able to lift 40 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and respect for TFN culture and community protocols.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a full-time position which requires a variable schedule; evening and weekend work may be required. Work is primarily indoor work in a commercial kitchen and at event sites. Some travel may be required.
HOURS OF WORK
Hours of work are variable and total 37.5 hours per week. Schedule will be based on operational needs of the department.
COMPENSATION
- $25.79 per hour to $26.97 per hour with annual cost of living increases. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience and internal equity.
