The Financial Controller is a key member of Tsawwassen First Nation government’s Finance team, responsible for overseeing all financial operations, ensuring sound fiscal management, and supporting the Nation’s strategic goals. This position provides leadership in financial planning, reporting, budgeting, and compliance, while upholding the values and traditions of the community.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting and financial transactions for TFN government and various related entities.

  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.

  • Implement and maintain internal financial controls and procedures.

  • Support annual budgeting process and forecasting needs.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and regulatory requirements.

  • Prepare annual consolidated financial statements for TFN in accordance with PSAS and other entities in accordance with applicable standards.

  • Lead annual financial audits and special purpose audit requirements.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and funding agreements.

  • Supervise and mentor finance staff, fostering professional growth and a collaborative team environment.

  • Provide necessary training, and timely financial analysis and recommendations to department managers to support their decision-making.

  • Communicate financial information to leadership, staff, and departments in a clear and transparent manner.

  • Respond to financial inquiries from members, funders, and auditors.

Qualifications

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA or equivalent) required.

  • Minimum 5 years’ progressive experience in financial management, preferably in government, non-profit, or Indigenous organizations.

  • Strong knowledge of Canadian public sector accounting standards and relevant legislation.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • High degree of integrity, cultural sensitivity, and respect for Indigenous values and governance.

  • Proficiency in financial accounting software as well as Microsoft Office Suite.

 

Working Conditions

Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30 permanent position based in Tsawwassen First Nation’s administrative offices. This position includes an optional hybrid remote work / in-person, subject to the approval of the department Manager.  On rare occasions, some evening or weekend work may be required depending on operational needs. 

 

Wages  

Pay scale for this position is $52.20 to $61.40 per hour with excellent benefits including enrolment in the BC Municipal Pension Plan. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience & internal equity.
