Tsawwassen First Nation has an exciting employment opportunity for the full-time regular position of Manager of Education.   This role is responsible for managing the Education programs, including Daycare, Educational support, Youth programs, and Training to ensure they meet needs and provide support services.

 

Reporting to the Director of Member Services, the Manager of Education supervises Child and Youth Workers (5) ECE, education and support staff (3), an ECE Coordinator and on-call casual youth program workers (2). The number of direct and sub-reports may vary dependent on operational needs. The Manager establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other staff members, Executive Council, community members and clients.

The Manager of Education works with School Districts, Post-Secondary Institutes, and provincial and federal government departments and agencies on education.

The Manager works collaboratively with other department managers and staff to provide area-based support services to TFN Members and other First Nations individuals that reside in the Delta, Richmond, and Surrey area utilizing the financial and other resources provided by the federal government or negotiated with industry partners.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the provision of quality daycare services for infants and children of TFN members and the public that meet or exceed standards set by provincial and federal requirements and programs
  • Coordinate the provision of support services for students in education through home/ school assistance
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve TFN education levels for all ages
  • Advocate for TFN students in receiving supports available within the school system
  • Ensure Delta School District is following the education action plan developed with TFN
  • Negotiate local education agreements when required
  • Manages consulting projects
  • Apply for grants with the First Nations Education steering committee when due
  • Ensure that TFN Members, children and families are aware of all educational policies and grants available to them
  • Oversee youth programs that provide intervention and prevention services designed to combat drug and alcohol abuse, enhance mental health, and develop healthy living, life skills and self-reliance
  • Motivate Grade 12 graduates and adults to pursue their post-secondary education
  • Provide, maintain and provide a list of services available to TFN students
  • Establish and maintain student transportation schedules and contracts according to regulations
  • Ensure the department holds a parent meeting quarterly in order to have parental involvement in education programs
  • Ensure funding program requirements are met, budgets are managed, and reporting requirements are fulfilled
  • Collaborate with other departments within TFN, including the Employment Training Coordinator, to support youth to young adult Member employment development
  • Managing the post-secondary student program
  • Providing financial, narrative and statistical reports
  • Develops plans, policies and program proposals
  • Be an active, contributing member of the leadership team

 

Qualifications:

    • Masters of Education or Masters level in a related field (such as an MBA) or an equivalent combination of experience and education
    • 5-8 years of related work experience
    • Strong leadership skills
    • Ability to multitask & work independently
    • Advanced interpersonal communication skills
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Experience with building and/or operating a school
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct themselves in a professional manner and maintain strict confidentiality
    • Valid class 5 BC Driver’s license
    • Must love working with children and youth
    • Enhanced criminal record review

 

Hours of work:

Business hours are 8:30 to 4:30. Hours of work may vary with school hours, after school hours, professional development days and summer holidays. Work is performed primarily in the TFN Youth Centre and includes outdoor activities.

 

Wages/Benefits:  Pay scale for this position is $55.94 to 62.93 per hour ($109,083 to $122,713.5 per annum) per hour with excellent benefits including enrolment in the BC Municipal Pension Plan. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience and internal equity.
