Full Time 5-month contract
Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) has a wonderful and challenging opportunity, in our Youth Centre for a Full Time 5-month contract Cook with a strong possibility of converting to regular full-time with benefits. TFN’s Youth Centre is fully equipped with a community kitchen that can accommodate food preparation for medium to large groups. The kitchen is stocked with supplies that support the proper preparation and storage of food, as well as the cleaning and maintenance items that are required to keep a kitchen running. Working within the Member Services Food service team, the Cook will develop meal plans, cook, and serve healthy meals and snacks to children and youth registered in TFN’s Youth Centre.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare a weekly meal plan
- Maintain proper food inventories and storage
- Ensure food is stored at safe temperatures
- Order and purchase groceries and supplies (on a weekly basis)
- Set up, organize, and maintain the kitchen’s workstations
- Prepare food that is in accordance with provincial health and food safety standards
- Clean and sanitize the kitchen after use
- Support meal services for offsite activities
- Receive direction from TFN staff and collaborate to prepare meals that correspond to Youth Centre programs
- Team planning, supporting and executing food related deliverables at TFN events for people of all ages
- Plan and deliver cooking lessons for children and youth
Qualifications
- Successful completion of high school diploma or equivalent
- Knowledgeable on proper food handling procedures, including successfully completing BC FOODSAFE Level 1 (TFN will provide if needed)
- Ability to create and follow standardized recipes
- Experience modifying recipes according to children’s food preferences, allergies, and sensitivities
- Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently
- Physical endurance to stand for entire shift
- Previous experience as a cook, or relevant work experience
- Knowledgeable about nutrition and preparing nutritious food options, including vegetarian alternatives
- Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
- Experience or willingness to learn and offer traditional Coast Salish meals
- Valid class 5 driver’s license
- Satisfactory criminal record check
Working Conditions
- A flexible work schedule will be required to facilitate the delivery of programs during the day, evenings, and some weekends
Hours of Work
Hours of work are variable and total 37.5 hours per week. The regular provision of service times will be Monday to Friday 7 am to 3 pm but may change to coincide with the program calendars.
Compensation
Pay scale for this position is $30.86 to $32.57 per hour. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience & internal equity. This contract position has a strong possibility of converting to a regular full-time with benefits.
