Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) is a proud Coast Salish Nation with our land base situated in Tsawwassen, B.C. In 2009, the Tsawwassen First Nation Final Agreement came into effect – this treaty was the first modern urban treaty in BC and the first treaty to be successfully negotiated through the BC Treaty Commission process. The Treaty provides us municipal, provincial and federal types of jurisdictions over a land base of 724 hectares.
Tsawwassen First Nation is a full member of Metro Vancouver, the first First Nation to do so. We are now going through a period of revival and renewal as we plan our future and seek opportunities to sustain our growth physically, economically and culturally, for present and future generations.
About the Opportunity
TFN is seeking a qualified individual to join our newly established Communications and Engagement Department in the regular full-time position of Communications and Engagement Specialist. In this role, you will work closely with the Manager of Communications and Engagement, to support the development, implementation, and monitoring of communication and engagement strategies that promote TFN programs, services, and events. You will collaborate with TFN staff to identify and coordinate opportunities to enhance TFN’s brand awareness and foster meaningful engagement with Members, the broader community, and other key audiences.
Position Summary:
Implementing TFN's Communication Plan, monitoring TFN Member, Community member, and Leasehold Resident engagement, and adapting communication tactics to better serve TFN Members, Community members, and Leasehold residents
- Stewarding the adoption of and adherence to TFN communication policies and procedures across the organization
- Developing traditional and digital communications materials to support TFN staff when sharing information with internal and external audiences
- Preparing communications assets, such as TFN community notices, newsletters, posters, briefs, videos, presentations, and social media posts
- Managing interview requests and coordinating media interviews for the Executive Council and/or TFN staff
- Working with TFN's Manager of Communications and Engagement to plan and coordinate internal and external meetings, gatherings, and events, while also helping to share the stories from these events to the community
- Responding to TFN Members, Community members, and questions about communication materials received by email, phone, social media, and in person
Qualifications or Experience:
- 4-6 years of communication experience or a combination of education and on-the-job experience in communications or relevant work
- Knowledge of the Tsawwassen First Nation or have an interest in learning about Tsawwassen First Nation
- Understanding of the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and can demonstrate cultural humility
- Ability to apply communication concepts, strategies, and the technical skills required to plan, implement, and evaluate communication plans
- Excellent verbal, written and editing communication skills, including spelling, grammar, context, and structure, and familiar with The Canadian Press Stylebook and writing guidelines
- Thorough knowledge of and proficiency with various software programs, including all Office 365 applications, websites, and social media
- Ability to communicate with TFN Members respectfully online, one-on-one and in group settings
- Ability to effectively prioritize, organize, and manage time. Managing multiple projects simultaneously, completing assignments on time, and organizing community meetings and large-scale events
- Ability to manage and organize concurrent projects while considering changing priorities and deadlines, emerging issues, impact of decisions, and competing and conflicting demands
- Ability to adapt to changes in work environment, work assignments, and/or organizational priorities
Working Conditions: This is a full-time position - evening and weekend work may be required. Work requires primarily indoor work in-office and at event sites (flexibility to work part of the time remotely). Some travel may be required.
Wages: Pay scale for this position is $43.58 per hour (e.g. $84,981 per annum) to $46.20 ($90,090 per annum) commensurate with excellent benefits, including enrolment in the BC Municipal Pension Plan. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience and internal equity.
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week. Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30 pm. Plus occasional evenings and weekends when required.
