The Senior Property Taxes and Utilities Accountant is responsible for managing the financial operations related to property taxes and utility billing for Tsawwassen First Nation. This role ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations, maintains accurate financial records, and provides financial insights to support the community's fiscal health.
Key Responsibilities
Property Taxes
- Oversee the assessment and collection of property taxes.
- Ensure accurate and timely preparation and distribution of property tax bills.
- Maintain and update property tax records and databases.
- Conduct audits and resolve discrepancies in property tax accounts.
Utility Billing
- Manage the utility billing process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Oversee the maintenance of utility billing records and databases.
- Handle complex billing issues and customer inquiries.
- Conduct audits of utility accounts to ensure compliance and accuracy.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for utility billing.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare and present financial reports related to property taxes and utilities.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends and provide strategic insights.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations.
General
- Assist accounting and financial management for TFN and related entities, including but not limited to period end close, annual audits and other internal and external reporting.
- Stay updated on changes in tax laws and utility regulations.
- Participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred.
- CPA or enrollment in CPA program preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in property tax and utility accounting.
- Strong knowledge of property tax laws and utility billing regulations.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Wages
Pay scale for this position is $44.73 to $50.29 per hour with excellent benefits including enrolment in the BC Municipal Pension Plan. Placement within the pay scale is based on a review of skills, experience & internal equity.
Working Conditions
Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30. This position includes an optional hybrid remote work / in-person, subject to the approval of the department Manager. On rare occasions, some evening or weekend work may be required depending on operational needs.
