Reporting to the Housing Manager, the Housing Junior Technician will be working alongside the housing journeyman they are responsible for completing building and renovation work in accordance with the BCBC 2018 guidelines and ensuring that project completion dates are met. The incumbent works with other trades as necessary to complete projects.

 

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Skeetchestn Indian Band policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Housing Manager.  Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees, and general matters of SIB.

 

New Construction, Renovation, Repairs and Maintenance

  • As a Housing Maintenance Worker, supports the day-to-day activities relating to construction of new building projects and major renovations of existing homes and buildings.
  • Applies knowledge of construction codes to inspect and/or assists with inspecting all aspects of construction (e.g. exterior, interior, walls, electrical, roof, concrete, paint, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, according to the BC Provincial Building Codes.
  • Ensures that all on-site safety procedures required are complied with and activities are conducted in a safe manner, including ensuring each incumbent is aware of his/her responsibilities with regards to safety in the workplace and WorkSafe BC and Canada Labour Code regulations.
  • Acts as a role model with a commitment to safety and ensures each worker is properly trained in the use of equipment required to carry out the work and follows approved safety procedures.
  • Completes construction work, maintenance, and repairs in fields of expertise as required. Work may include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, drywall, roofing, demolition, foundations, footings, slabs, landscaping etc.
  • Estimates required materials, supplies, and labour requirements for projects and recommends purchases.
  • Ensures that materials and construction comply with BC Building Code and all other applicable codes.
  • Reports and communicates project progress and/or results to the Housing Manager, Housing.
  • Liaises with department staff and tenants regarding construction, renovations, maintenance and repairs.

Other

  • Attends department meetings, all staff meetings, safety meetings etc.

 

Other duties as required.

 

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience

  • Skilled plumber  and construction with working knowledge of other trades.
  • Minimum 3 years of residential plumbing and construction experience.
  • Experience using power and hand tools (i.e., circular saw, drill, hand saw), tape measure, hammers, squares, bubble levels, etc.
  • Experience implementing safe work procedures.
  • Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.
  • Satisfactory criminal records check

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of BC Building Codes, CSA, and Electrical Code.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other construction related trades.
  • Knowledge of Part ii of the Canada Labour Code and Worker’s Compensation Act and regulations.
  • Ability to role model safe work procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with suppliers, contractors, community members and co-workers. 
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer skills including MS Office.
  • Genuine respect for Skeetchestn Indian Band culture and protocols.

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily on a construction site and entails working in all weather conditions. Must follow safe work procedures.  Physical fitness to perform Housing Maintenance Worker including lifting, stooping, bending, climbing, and standing.  Occasional travel to attend meetings and training is required.
