The Education Manager leads the planning, delivery, and evaluation of SIB’s Education Department, including Day Care, Education programs (K-12, adult/STEP), and Secwepemc Culture and Language. This role establishes and administers programs aligned with SIB’s long-term plans, develops education policies to meet ISC block funding requirements, and builds strong partnerships with families, schools, funders, and community.

 

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Skeetchestn Indian Band policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Director of Operations. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to students, members,  employees, and general matters of SIB.

 

Program Management

  • Lead, implement, manage, and evaluate Education Department programs, including Preschool/Day Care, Language and Culture, K-12 supports, adult education, and STEP programs.
  • Set goals and strategies; identify and address barriers to success.
  • Monitor program effectiveness and community needs; implement improvements in consultation with the Director of Operations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with ISC, FNESC, ministries, agencies, and service providers; negotiate agreements as needed.
  • Draft and present education and preschool policies for Chief and Council approval; develop related protocols.
  • Recommend approaches to alleviate or resolve community social issues connected to education.
  • Promote education, culture, and language within the community; plan events, training, and community educational opportunities.
  • Manage communications about programs and services; engage the community in needs assessment and satisfaction feedback.
  • Ensure programs are client-centered, accessible, and aligned with approved goals and work plans.

 

Department Management

  • Provide leadership and direction to Education and Language program staff.
  • Lead recruitment and selection; ensure effective onboarding and orientation.
  • Coach, mentor, and support staff; ensure safe work procedures and support staff self-care.
  • Oversee performance planning, training and development, performance improvement, and corrective action.
  • Ensure staff have the skills and knowledge required for their roles.

 

Financial Management and Administration

  • Lead and approve funding proposals (with the Director of Operations); oversee reporting to funders.
  • Manage departmental finances; prepare annual budgets with the Finance Manager and Director of Operations.
  • Monitor, track, and reconcile expenditures to budget; identify variances and recommend revisions.
  • Approve expenditures within authorized budgets.
  • Oversee records and information systems.
  • Provide regular and special reports to the Director of Operations and/or Chief and Council.

 

Management Team

  • Participates as a collaborative member of the Management Team.
  • Works with the Management team to ensure a healthy and productive work environment where employees work together to achieve individual, departmental and Skeetchestn goals.
  • Keeps the Management Team and Director Operations apprised on emergent issues that may affect Social Development programs.
  • Maintains a current level of knowledge related to Social Development and governing regulations and requirements.

 

 

Other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience

  • Degree in Community Services or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ directly related experience in education support, preferably in a First Nation community.
  • Experience developing and managing education programs and training.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, financial management, proposal/grant writing and reporting, and advanced policy development.
  • Experience with relevant regulations, professional practices, and standards.
  • Experience working within an Indigenous community.
  • Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.
  • Satisfactory criminal records check (vulnerable sector).
  • Willingness to pursue further education in support of the role.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Genuine respect for Skeetchestn Indian Band culture and protocols; strong cultural sensitivity and understanding.
  • Enjoys working with children, youth, and adults; committed to supporting education goals.
  • Working knowledge of provincial K-12 and Indigenous education programs/supports.
  • Knowledge of college, university, and trades programming.
  • Strong written communication skills, including grant writing and reporting.
  • Experience working with funding providers; ability to negotiate and build partnerships.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; builds trust-based relationships.
  • Knowledge of the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and impacts of historical trauma.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; high professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, community members, and co-workers.
  • Intermediate computer skills (MS Office).

 

Working Conditions

  • On-site in Skeetchestn, BC (office, schools, and community settings).
  • Some travel for campus tours, meetings, or training.
