On-Call Bus Driver

The School Bus Driver is responsible for the transportation of students to and from the Skeetchestn Community School following the daily schedule.  The Bus Driver is also responsible for transportation of students and adults for assigned field trips, ensuring a safe environment at all times.

 

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Skeetchestn Indian Band policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Principal.  Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to students, members,  employees, and general matters of SIB.

 

  • Safely operates the school bus transporting children to and from the Skeetchestn Community School according to a set daily schedule, ensuring pick-up and drop-off of students as per schedule, while maintaining order and security on the bus.
  • Operates the school bus in a safe and efficient manner, obeying all laws, regulations and rules of conduct.
  • Informs students of safety rules and ensures rules are followed during trips.
  • Completes required tasks to ensure safe and continuous bus operation, including cleaning of the interior and exterior and refueling.
  • Completes necessary planning for special school trips.
  • Assesses impact of weather conditions and in consultation with the Principal, determines whether to proceed with bus operations/schedule.
  • Performs daily safety and maintenance checks, ensuring proper maintenance of the school bus, and arranging minor maintenance such as routine oil changes.
  • Advises Principal of any required repairs, arranging repairs and inspections with mechanical facility as required.
  • Assists with student supervision during school field trips.
  • Maintains a record of attendance on the school bus.

 

Other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience

  • Minimum valid BC Class 1 driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
  • Experience driving a bus in variable weather conditions including snow and ice.
  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).
  • First Aid/CPR certification.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Enjoys working with and supporting children and youth.
  • Ability to build trust and serve as a positive role model.
  • Knowledge of local roadways and highway.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform day to day bus maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to follow safe work procedures at all times.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work with children to resolve conflict and solve problems.
  • Empathetic, patient and approachable.
  • Genuine respect for Skeetchestn Indian Band culture and protocols.

Work takes place primarily on the bus - a high-energy environment where high sensory attention is required.
