Safety Leader

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Safety Leader is responsible for leading and coordinating all occupational health, safety and loss prevention programs to ensure the safety and wellbeing of employees and the protection of the physical plants and company property.  The incumbent provides expertise and guidance to all levels of management to promote a culture that ensures the highest standards of safety and occupational health.  The Safety Leader is responsible for management and coordination of Emergency Response Services for the site.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements policies, programs, processes and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines related to occupational health and safety.
  • Develops and implements accident investigation, data analysis, and recurrence prevention programs and procedures.
  • Provides support and guidance to the site management team with respect health and safety needs and issues
  • Acts as a resource advisor for the JOHSC (Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee) in order to identify opportunities for improvements for safety programs and procedures.
  • Provides technical and developmental training to all employees and contractors.
  • In cooperation with other departments, ensures compliance with legal requirements on the selection, modification, and/or installation of all new or existing equipment by supplying technical expertise and guidance within the areas of safety acceptability.
  • Analyzes safety performance and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Assists supervisory staff in corrective actions resulting from analysis of accident and incident reports, safety statistics, audits and inspections in conjunction with the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
  • Prepares and maintains an annual budget for Health and Safety.
  • Identifies training needs related to health and safety.
  • Promotes a safety culture that encourages individual responsibility and personal commitment.
  • Coaches and motivates team leaders, supervisors, and employees to identify unsafe conditions or acts; and, assists in implementing changes to prevent injuries, while maintaining the support of all stakeholders employing various safety techniques.
  • Ensures the mill maintains a high level of first aid, safety, security and fire protection capabilities on a 24 hour, 365 day basis.
  • Represents the Mill on both company wide and site committees on health & safety, Industrial Hygiene and emergency response related matters.
  • Manages the Emergency Response Team including responsibilities for implementing operating guidelines, maintaining and training members, conducting assessments to ensure compliance with applicable policies and regulations.
  • Manages Site Security and ensure compliance with relevant regulators.
  • Interfaces with regulatory agencies and coordinates committee members and site staff to formulate corrective actions actions directed by government officials.
  • Coordinates and supports management and union activities to facilitate continuous improvement in the areas of occupational health, safety and loss prevention. 

Qualifications:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline such as Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene or other related fields.
  • A CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or CSO (Construction Safety Officer) designation would be an asset.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in Occupational Health & Safety in an Industrial setting.
  • Experience in Emergency Response programs such as fire department involvement, hazmat training, or incident command would be an asset.
  • Expertise in the industry including project management and operations management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, comfortable in a small team environment and interacting with senior level managers.
  • Excellent written, verbal, listening and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated high standards of integrity.
  • Effectively lead, participate, communicate and collaborate in corporate initiatives.
  • Possesses situational awareness of surroundings with the ability to adapt to new and changing environments, who can relate well at all levels.
  • A high sense of urgency with regards to making safety improvements.
  • Ability to handle complexity as well as balance the big picture and details given scope & scale of role.
  • The ability to be decisive while understanding organizational sensitivity.
