Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and repair heavy-duty engines, transmissions, hydraulics, braking, and steering systems, electrical/electronic controls, fuel and emission systems, cooling systems, and related subsystems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections according to manufacturer specifications and company PM schedules. 
  • Use OEM diagnostic tools, scan tools, and hand-held data devices to troubleshoot faults; interpret wiring diagrams and service manuals.
  • Remove, repair, or replace worn components (blocks, heads, pumps, pumps, actuators, sensors, wiring, connectors) and perform overhauls when required. 
  • Assist in ordering parts, managing inventory, and ensuring availability of necessary tools and equipment. 
  • Familiarity with maintenance management systems and inventory control. 
  • Perform basic administrative functions required for invoicing, point of sales, cash handling, receiving, etc.
  • Other duties as required of this position

Qualifications:

  • Red Seal Endorsement as a Journeyman Heavy-Duty Mechanic (or equivalent interprovincial qualification) and eligibility to work in BC. 
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience as a heavy-duty mechanic (in a shop or field setting).
  • Stay current with industry trends, new technologies, and safety standards; participate in training and apply learnings on the job. 
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills; proficient with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, electrical/electronic systems, and cooling/under-hood components.
  • Perform physical work in enclosed spaces, able to lift up to 50 lbs., heights, noise, dust, and fumes.
  • Additional certifications such as WHMIS, TDG, H2S Alive, or forklift/winch operation. 
  • Willingness and ability to be on call and to respond to emergencies and alarms.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and OEM specifications. 
  • Experience supervising staff and overseeing contractors.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic software and data interpretation; familiarity with CAN bus networks is an asset. 
  • Solid mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and good hand-eye coordination. 
  • Valid BC driver’s license (Class 5) with a clean driving record; ability to obtain additional endorsements if required for certain job sites. 
  • Ability to operate hand tools and powered tools and safety equipment.
  • Experience in multiple sectors (construction, mining, forestry, trucking) or with specific equipment brands. 
  • Welding or fabrication experience (MIG/TIG) is a plus.
