Northern Strands is currently recruiting to fulfill the role of a permanent, full-time Wire Rope Sling and Cable Splicer for our Regina Branch. This position is primarily responsible for building wire rope slings and rigging assemblies, building chain rigging assemblies, and spooling rope, assisting in loading, unloading, lifting, moving of materials, and maintaining inventory. In addition, the Wire Rope Sling and Cable Splicer assists with preparing materials and items to fill requests from the Order Desk, packing, checking, shipping/receiving materials, and storing items in appropriate inventory locations. The Wire Rope Sling and Cable Splicer position is an integral part of our team and contributes to the success of the company.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Rigger Duties

  • Perform and/or assist with building wire rope slings and assemblies
  • Perform and/or assist with building chain assembly orders
  • Perform or assist with reeling rope for customer orders
  • Ensure that master reels are marked correctly immediately after a cut and that rope is tagged appropriately for easy identification
  • Perform or assist with restocking wire rope on racking and pallet racks
  • Maintaining and updating benchmarking sheets ensuring technical specifications for varying sizes of wire rope are accurate
  • Ensuring synthetics bay is kept clean (dust/dirt free)
  • Ensure synthetics specific tools are maintained in good repair and organized for efficient processing
    • Ensure that sling bay and tools are kept clean; tools are stored in proper locations
  • Maintain and calibrate wire rope and synthetics rope length counter
  • Tying synthetic slings (i.e., 3 strand, 8 strand, 12 braid, and double braid) in accordance with applicable standards
  • Pour wirelock and spelter sockets according to specifications and pull test upon completion to prove working load limits
  • Manufacture lifting assemblies (i.e. bridle sling)
  • Calibrating all sleeves and stops and ensuring outside dimensions are correct after pressing
  • Ensuring adequate stock and supplies are available for daily use
  • Inspect and calibrate all dies ensuring they are in proper working condition; remove worn or damaged dies from service
  • Conduct pull testing on slings and assemblies ensuring products meet specified working load and testing limits
  • Issue compliance certificates confirming technical specifications of slings and assemblies
  • Review and contribute to safe job procedures and safe work practices pertaining to work area
  • Verify product quality before it is sent out to customers and/or work sites
  • Ensure all workorders are completed properly and in a timely manner
  • Ensure regular maintenance conducted on press (e.g., weekly lubrication, inspections, calibration)
  • Conduct chain assembly inspections identifying deformities and repairing same

 

Warehouse Duties

  • Assemble containers and crates, record contents manually or in computer system, pack goods to be shipped and affix identifying information and shipping instructions
  • Assist with loading and unloading of goods from trucks or other conveyances
  • Inspect and verify incoming goods against invoices or other documents, record shortages and reject damaged goods
  • Inspect and verify incoming goods against packing lists or other documents; record shortages, and reject damaged goods
  • Unpack, code/tag and route goods to appropriate storage areas
  • May operate forklift, hand truck, or other equipment to load, unload, transport, and store materials
  • Pick items to fill customer requests from Order Desk and Sales department
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures regarding shipping and receiving in order to provide back-up assistance to the Shipping/Receiving department
    • Follow procedures for shipping including preparing bills of lading, customs forms, invoices, and other shipping documents
    • Contact carriers to arrange for shipping of goods
  • Assist with filling chain orders
  • Restock chain drums, wire rope on racking, and pallet racks 
  • Build and paint reels
  • Assist with regular inventory cycle counts

 

General

  • Assist with cleaning, maintaining and repairing machinery, equipment, and tools as required
    • Perform regularly equipment checks and maintenance
    • Fluids and greasing maintenance
    • Check area fire extinguishers
  • Assist with general facilities maintenance
    • Ensure organized workspace and warehouse
    • Warehouse maintenance, cleaning, mopping, and snow removal
    • Ensure adequate tools are available and stocked to perform daily tasks
  • Perform all duties in compliance with corporate safety policies and procedures
  • To deal courteously with customers, vendors, and co-workers, displaying a professional conduct and appearance
  • Promote a positive, team-oriented environment
  • Perform other duties and tasks, as assigned
  • Provide other support to the department and company, as required

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS

The ideal candidate must possess:

  • Minimum 1 year work experience in wire rope sling and cable splicing is required
  • Minimum 1 year manufacturing experience is preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities would be considered
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent
  • Forklift certificate would be considered an asset
  • Any valid safety-related training certificates would be considered an asset (i.e., WHMIS, First Aid/CPR)
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test will be required
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada on a full-time permanent basis
