The Trainer is responsible for conducting training courses offered by the Northern Strands Group of Companies (NSGC). These training courses are focused on working knowledge of the provincial regulations, as well as relevant and applicable standards. Required skills include the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner, with the ability to create topical anecdotes that speak to trainees from a wide variety of different work backgrounds. Travel will be required. The Trainer will be expected to participate as an HSE Team member and promote safe work habits within the company.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Training Programs

  • Continually improve, develop, and maintain a systematic training course portfolio
    • Provide training internally as per corporate requirements
    • Provide training externally per client requirements
    • Ensure training meets OH&S Regulatory requirements and applicable standards
  • Coordinate internal training prior to a new contract, job assignment, or project kick off
  • Perform training seminars:
    • Review course content and memorize subject matter for each training session
    • Ensure requisite equipment/tools/classroom/other resources are prepared in advance
    • Present courses according to guidelines/lesson plans, standards, and legislation
    • Conduct follow‐up tasks (e.g., grading assessments, field‐level competency evaluations)
    • Ensure records are updated once training is completed successfully
  • Travel intra‐provincially as well as inter‐provincially to deliver training seminars
  • Duties also include:
    • Schedule training seminars with clients
    • Schedule travel arrangements and accommodations, where required
    • Client relations/follow up calls/training inquiries
    • Cost tracking
    • Create, issue, and track/file certificates
    • Work with the Health and Safety Admin to generate quotes for customers
    • Sourcing training materials and/or demonstration props
    • On occasion, work nights, weekends, and overtime to suit clients’ schedule
    • Update training calendars

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend regular train the trainer courses and keep certifications current
  • Check for changes in legislation or standards that may affect the training programs, HSE department, and/or the Company

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mining, construction, agriculture, and/or oil and gas industries
  • Experience scaffolding or fall protection programs/equipment would be an asset
  • Experience in rigging and hoisting would be an asset
  • Forklift, WHMIS, fit testing, and other safety‐related training and certificates would be an asset
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to speak proficiently in front of small and large groups of people
    • Previous training/public speaking experience would be an asset
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety regulations, standards, and industry best practices
  • Ability to create lesson plans, develop materials, and deliver training
  • Ability to assess skill level and understanding of training participants
  • Ability to promote training courses/services/products
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Able to efficiently manage time to deliver a quality product consistently
  • Ability to multi‐task, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and work well under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Possess, set, and convey a high standard of positivity and professionalism
