About Ironworkers Union Local 97

Ironworkers Union Local 97 (Ironworkers Local 97) is a part of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworkers. Its area of coverage includes all of British Columbia, and the Yukon. Since 1906, Ironworkers Local 97 has fought to better the lives of Ironworkers through collective bargaining. Our mandate is to raise wages and working conditions for Ironworkers, and to ensure that Ironworkers receive the training they need to be safe, productive, and professional at work.

Ironworkers Local 97 is also committed to actively increasing the representation of women, minorities, and aboriginal people in the ironworking trade by offering ongoing training opportunities. Training programs available include: Fall Protection, Aerial work platform, WHIMIS, Confined Space, Site Ready BC, First Aid, Forklift training, Telehandler training, CWB Welding certifications, Foreman training, Shop Steward training, Superintendent training, Post tensioning training, entry level rebar bootcamps. Learning tools offered include online learning system for continued education and tutors for apprentices

About the Opportunity

Ironworkers Local 97 is looking for full-time Journeyperson Ironworkers - Generalists or Reinforcing to join their team. Projects will take place in British Columbia and the Yukon.

Day-to-day as a Journeyperson, your responsibilities could include:

  • Synthesizing information from a variety of sources, including blueprints, plans and written specifications, in order to select proper materials and the needed amounts for a project 
  • Using details from written plans and instructions from supervisors in order to securely bolt metal structures like beams and columns together
  • Transporting heavy metal pieces from the ground level to a higher location using tools like cranes or working with other team members to help position pieces correctly
  • Building steel structural pieces and components when working on a project that involves a large structure like a commercial building, a bridge, a highway, or other public works project
  • Ensuring proper placement, balance, and alignment of structural pieces by using levels, laser tools or plumb bobs
  • Transforming metal pieces into functional elements that meet the guidelines of the project by cutting materials and using fabrication techniques
  • Accessing challenging work positions that are either at elevation or otherwise difficult to reach while following the proper provincial regulations

About You

To succeed as a Journeyperson, you need to have the following skills and experiences: 

  • Completion of a Red Seal Ironworker (Generalist) or Red Seal Ironworker (Reinforcing) ticket
  • Ability to pass all types of screening before employment
  • Physical endurance to complete the necessary tasks
  • Knowledge of various types of materials and how to work with them

In addition, welders certified with the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) ticket, will also be considered.
