The RDOS is currently recruiting for an Instrumentation/Electrical Technician to provide a combination of skilled work in the installation, troubleshooting, repair and programming of digital control, electrical and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems used in sanitary sewer, water treatment and distribution, information technology, landfill operations, and various facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Performs regular electrical inspection, installation, calibration and maintenance work on a variety of electrical and control systems including: pump systems, back up generators, UPS systems, SCADA equipment, Programmable Logic Controller (PLCs) and related devices connected to the digital control system.
- Programs, installs, commissions and repairs motors, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), sensors and electronic flow meters for water/wastewater facilities.
- Coordinates with other departments in contributing electrical inventory data as part of the RDOS asset management program.
- Liaises with department staff to support back-up programs for all electrical systems to ensure prompt reinstatement in the event of main system malfunction.
- Acts as the RDOS point of contact for electrical work and system maintenance needs with operations staff, project managers and contractors.
- Investigates system alarms on callouts and makes repairs or adjustments, as required.
- Installs and tests new equipment and system functionality as required for capital projects.
- Researches equipment for use in other RDOS operations and assesses conflicts with infrastructure.
- Assesses and evaluates a variety of utility related software/hardware options and makes recommendations to the Senior Manager of Public Works.
- Provides training to system operators and system users on new/updated equipment to ensure proper procedures and safety methods are followed.
- Responds to inquires related to specific system functioning, construction and installation matters.
- Produces correspondence, safe work procedures, reports and tracks data in SharePoint all potentially within short timeframes.
- Promotes the RDOS Occupational Health & Safety Program to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Conducts site visits for systems checks as needed and completes documentation with the contractors.
- Monitors delivery of electrical contract services in relation to contract terms, resolves routine problems and escalates non-compliance issues.
- Conducts preventative maintenance inspections of equipment, prepares reports on conditions and makes recommendations for corrective actions.
- Compiles and analyzes data for annual reports and budgets.
- Provides assistance to senior staff in reviewing procedures, policies and strategic planning documentation for infrastructure development.
Qualifications:
- A Certificate of Qualification Issued by the Province of B.C. or Interprovincial Qualification (Red Seal) in the Trade of Industrial Electrician.
- Field Safety Representative Class B ticket.
- Current Canadian Electrical Code Course.
- Instrumentation and Control Technician trades certification would be considered an asset.
- A minimum of four (4) years of related experience in electrical/electronic instrumentation work preferably in a wastewater or water treatment/distribution facility.
- Strong knowledge of the standards, methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in instrumentation, electrical maintenance and construction work.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with an ability to independently troubleshoot and problem solve.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to effectively coordinate cross departmental project work.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills to keep projects progressing.
- Working knowledge of engineering drawings for water and wastewater utilities and other development infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and general safety protocols.
- Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform manual work in all types of weather conditions.
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, with an ability to respond on short notice to emergencies.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Valid First Aid Certificate.
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence.
This regular, full-time position is included in the BCGEU bargaining unit. The hourly wage for the outdoor classified position is paygrade 9, $46.86 per hour January-June ($47.33 July-December) plus an attractive benefits package. This position is also eligible to participate in the flexible scheduling initiative.
