Welding Shop General Labourer

The Welding Shop General Labourer’s primary responsibility is assisting employees in the welding shop. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparing materials for the welders, cutting steel for jobs, keeping the shop and welding area clean, and performing welding tasks according to instructions.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Equipment Maintenance (Compressor, Forklift, & Shop Truck)

    • Daily equipment checks and maintenance

    • Complete inspection reports on maintenance, repairs, oil changes, etc.

  • Saw Operation

    • Ensure the work area around the saw is kept clean and free of end cuts and other materials

    • Operate saw to cut and prepare material for jobs

    • Track any materials cut out of inventory using the Material Usage Sheet

  • Assist the welders by preparing materials needed

    • Review drawings and gather required materials

    • Use critical thinking skills to identify issues before cutting and bring to attention of the Welding Supervisor prior to the job starting

    • Be familiar with grades and types of steel to be used to ensure appropriate materials are selected when preparing steel for the welders

  • Welding
    • Complete assigned welding tasks and ask for assistance and/or clarification as required

    • Familiarize with standard welding concepts, techniques, and procedures

    • Prepare to take CWB welding tests

  • Welding shop and general facility maintenance

    • Ensure proper disposal of garbage and used-consumables

    • Ensure yard is kept organized and materials are placed properly for storage

    • Ensure that unused pallets are marked for garbage and removed or transferred to other locations for use

    • Ensure adequate tools and supplies are available to perform daily tasks

  • Fire Extinguishers

    • Ensure required fire extinguisher quantity, visibility, and inspection standards are met in the welding shop

  • Complete the necessary paperwork required to properly document and track costs and materials on a job

  • Operating forklift, hand truck, or other equipment to load, unload, transport, and store goods

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum Grade 12

  • Minimum two years of experience in a fabrication shop would be beneficial but not required

  • Any safety-related training and certificates would be beneficial but not required (i.e. Forklift)

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail

  • Strong time-management skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize

  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
