Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area over 10,400 km2 and is renowned for its orchards, vineyards and golf courses, as well as its widely varied landscape including deserts, mountains and valleys, pristine lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is currently recruiting for a regular, full-time Maintenance Worker to join the Public Works team.
The Maintenance Worker position is responsible for performing a variety of routine tasks in the operation and maintenance of facilities, utilities, and grounds.
Key Responsibilities:
- Performs a variety of tasks in the operation of facilities, utilities, parks and grounds. Tasks may include: painting; sweeping; cleaning public areas such as washroom facilities, tables; collecting garbage and litter; repairing and maintaining bridges, culverts, gates and fences; repairing trail surfaces; installing signs and kiosks; clearing weed and brush; cutting, weeding, and maintaining lawns, grounds, flowers, shrubs, trees; irrigation installation and maintenance, and landscape construction.
- Assists staff under clear direction with a variety of tasks including such items as the installation and repair of sewer and water pipe, flushing and hydrant maintenance, sampling, trench levelling, laying pipe, installing gaskets, connecting pipe, backfilling with gravel, and dam maintenance.
- Operates, maintains and troubleshoots small power tools and equipment, including but not limited to: small tractors and attached mowers, light duty trucks, small riding and hand mowers, weed eaters, vacuums, chainsaws, fork lifts, rock drills, jackhammers, compressors, vibrating hand rollers, and tamping machines.
- Collects and records data in the field.
- Responds to public inquiries and redirects as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
- A certificate or diploma in a related discipline may be considered an asset.
- Knowledge and experience with a variety of equipment and power tools.
- Experience operating small motorized equipment.
- Experience in a related position such as construction, horticulture, and/or landscaping is preferred.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently, with limited supervision.
- Ability to be courteous and diplomatic in dealing with the public and co-workers.
- Ability to conduct field work and produce simple reports such as recording inventory of corporate assets (GPS use).
- Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work in the presence of all types of weather conditions.
- Ability to read blueprints and plans and prepare sketches may be considered an asset.
- Valid First Aid Certificate or an ability and willingness to obtain one.
- Valid B.C. Driver's Licence.
This regular, full-time position is included in the BCGEU bargaining unit. The hourly wage for the position is $32.43. In addition, we offer an attractive benefits package.
