Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area over 10,400 kmand is renowned for its orchards, vineyards and golf courses, as well as its widely varied landscape including deserts, mountains and valleys, pristine lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The RDOS is currently recruiting for a temporary, full-time Communications Coordinator I to assist with the planning and coordinating of communications and public relations programs and services for the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, with a focus on assisting all departments with consistent communication/public engagement approaches. 

 

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Researches, coordinates, writes, edits and produces a wide variety of internal/external communications, complex correspondence, materials, info releases, monthly newsletters, advertisements and annual reports within short timeframes.
  • Informs and advises all departments on consistent communication/public engagement project coordination from inception to completion, including procedure development and partnership engagement.
  • Assists the Communication Coordinator with the ongoing development and implementation of the public engagement/communication ‘tool kit’ and templates to assist departments in their communication efforts, through benchmarking and consideration of local government communication/public engagement best practices.
  • Reviews all work provided by departmental project staff and consultants with regard to communication and public engagement initiatives.
  • Identifies project risks and develops risk mitigation strategies and/or risk controls with respect to communications/public engagement initiatives.
  • Assists with the development, branding, design and preparation of printed and electronic information. 
  • Anticipates media interest in Regional District projects and prepares key messaging, media plans and releases.
  • Benchmarks and recommends relevant communications/public engagement policy and administrative directives (e.g. social media policy).
  • Develops and promotes good news stories for both internal and external awareness and educational purposes (e.g. develops RDOS Regional Reflections articles).
  • Researches, recommends, coordinates and implements public engagement/communication software (e.g. Voyent Alert! and Bang the Table).
  • Acts as a resource at meetings and presentations with various interested parties.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations to community groups.
  • Acts as a resource for technical communications support at meetings and presentations with staff, community members and other interested parties to provide project information.
  • Responds to standard queries raised by volunteers, community groups with respect to communication/public engagement strategies and initiatives (e.g. Community Champion program).
  • Participates as a member of the Emergency Response Team as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) year diploma in public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • An ability to obtain a professional certification from the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2).
  • A minimum two (2) years of experience in a communications/public engagement position in a government setting.
  • Knowledge of project management principals.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work on a number of concurrent tasks with deadline pressures.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, tact, diplomacy and sound judgement.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision.
  • Knowledge of legislation and regulations such as the Local Government Act, rules, regulations and bylaws applicable to a regional district environment would be considered an asset.
  • Exhibits excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate programs and projects.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.   
  • Ability to pass and maintain a criminal record check.
  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence

 

This temporary, (unknown duration due to staff on leave) full-time position is included in the BCGEU bargaining unit.  The hourly rate for this position is $39.28 per hour plus 15% in lieu of benefits and pension.
