Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area over 10,400 km2 and is renowned for its orchards, vineyards and golf courses, as well as its widely varied landscape including deserts, mountains and valleys, pristine lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The RDOS is currently recruiting for a Pest Control Attendant to join the Public Works team at the RDOS. Working with the Lead Pest Control Attendant, the Pest Control Attendant performs a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of the pest (mosquito) control program and water/sewer systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all tasks related to the organization’s mosquito control program under the guidance of the Lead Pest Control Attendant.
  • Examines breeding sites and determines mosquito larvae levels, necessary treatment, and post- treatment analysis for efficacy.
  • Assists in the development of the sampling and larva identification program, site selection and follow up analysis.
  • Adheres to Regional District safe work procedures identified in the Occupational Health & Safety Program and conducts field work in a safety conscious manner.
  • Collects and records data in the field including larva counts, water levels, site conditions, habitat changes, site contacts, and pesticide used.
  • Collaborates with contractors, suppliers, specialists and agencies on critical data to program activities.
  • Operates and maintains field and safety equipment including carrying a back-mounted spreader weighing a maximum of 50 pounds, with some work involving helicopter pesticide dispersion techniques.
  • Responds to public queries while in the field, via email or by telephone in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Assists in completing the Mosquito Control Program year end reporting with photos and video files, presentations, reporting and ensures all are uploaded to the data network
  • Performs a variety of tasks in the operation of water and sewer utilities, including collecting garbage and litter, performing minor maintenance tasks and clearing vegetation as required.
  • Assists System Operators with a variety of tasks including supporting minor installation and repair of sewer and water pipe, flushing and hydrant maintenance, sampling, and performing dam maintenance.
  • Operates and maintains small power tools and equipment, including, but not limited to: weed eaters, vacuums, chainsaws, pesticide blowers, rock drills, jackhammers, compressors, vibrating hand rollers, and tamping machines. 
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • Pesticide (Mosquito and Biting Fly) Applicator’s Certificate upon appointment to the position.
  • Certificate or training in environmental education or related discipline is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in pest control or a related position in agriculture, horticulture, and/or landscaping with a moderate level of “back country” experience and/or training.
  • Knowledge and experience with a variety of equipment including power tools, small motorized and field equipment.
  • Experienced working around livestock (cattle and horses predominantly), dogs and possesses wildlife (snakes, birds, ticks, coyotes and bears etc.) and environmental awareness.
  • Demonstrates a mechanical and technological aptitude.
  • Ability to safely drive off road, on trails, gravel/secondary roads and paved roads in a variety of conditions.
  • Ability to read plans and prepare sketches and conduct field work using GPS and other related field equipment.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision in remote locations.
  • Ability to be courteous and diplomatic in dealing with the public and co-workers.
  • Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work in the presence of all types of weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel), database entry, and experience with Google Earth.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate including Wilderness and Remote First Aid upon hire.
  • Valid BC driver's licence and ICBC driver's abstract.

 

This temporary, full-time position is included in the BCGEU bargaining unit.  The hourly wage for the position is $32.92 (Paygrade 3) and increases to $33.25 July 1 2025, plus 15% in lieu of all benefits and pension.
