Recreation Program Leader Summer Student

Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area over 10,400 km2 and is renowned for its orchards, vineyards and golf courses, as well as its widely varied landscape including deserts, mountains and valleys, pristine lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is currently recruiting for a temporary, full-time Recreation Program Leader Summer Student to join the Community Services team.

Reporting to the Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Program Leader Summer Student will be responsible for planning, supporting and facilitating recreation and “play” activities and special events in the region.  This position engages children and families in recreation in both structured and unstructured play settings and will be responsible for greeting participants, leading activities (or partnering with other agencies), ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants, as well as organizing equipment and supplies.  The areas of work may include Kaleden, Okanagan Falls, Naramata and West Bench.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • be between the ages of 15 and 30 years at the start of the employment.
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • hold "student" status which means be attending school, college, or university who has just completed their studies or intends to return to school, college, or university in the subsequent academic year.
  • Experience working or volunteering with children and families in a recreational setting would be an asset.
  • Possess skills in recreational leadership and physical literacy would be an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and marketing skills.
  • Ability to pass and maintain a criminal record check.
  • Hold a current Standard First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Hold a valid, Class 5 or 7 BC Driver’s licence.

 

NOTE:  This position may be partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Program provided by Service Canada.  Canada Summer Jos supports program objectives by helping young people obtain quality summer work experiences.

This temporary, full-time position is included in the BCGEU bargaining unit.  The hourly wage for the position is $20.00 plus 15% in lieu of all benefits and pension (total hourly wage is $23.00).
