The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is currently recruiting for a full-time Emergency Program Coordinator to join the Community Services team.

This exempt full-time position is responsible for for the coordination of planning and evaluating the Regional Emergency Management Program in accordance with applicable plans, bylaws, regulations and policies.  The position supervises employees during emergency events and monitors the performance of independent contractors.  This position is the key contact for the Electoral Areas and member municipalities in matters of emergency mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery and will be available as necessary to perform designated functions during emergencies. 

Qualifications:

  • Two-year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in emergency management, supplemented by courses in emergency preparedness including risk assessment and emergency management.
  • Minimum of three (3) years directly related experience including serving as an emergency management professional, preferably with some time in a local government setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of the BC Emergency Management and Incident Command Systems, and the roles and responsibilities of the local authority under the BC Emergency Program Act.
  • Experience working in an Emergency Operations Centre.
  • Experience and knowledge of local government legislation and applicable legal principles as well as Statutes and Regulations related to the role, including the BC Emergency Program Act.
  • Team leader/ project manager experience in developing and delivering comprehensive training packages, including evaluation mechanisms.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to maintain a volunteer program.
  • Strong conflict resolution, communication and facilitation skills.  Critical Incident Stress Debriefing training would be an asset.
  • Demonstrates confidence while being courteous, tactful and diplomatic.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) including the ability to effectively utilize a range of software used in Regional District operations as well as effective online researching capabilities.
  • Ability to understand maps and related materials necessary to perform requirements of the position.
  • Ability to quickly respond to emergencies as needed; and to work various shifts to meet operational requirements, including weekends and evenings as necessary. Must be capable of working extended hours under stressful conditions, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Standard First Aid
  • Ability to pass and maintain a criminal record check.
  • Valid B.C. Driver’s Licence.

This position is an excluded position in the RDOS and offers a competitive annual salary of  $86,594 plus an attractive fringe benefits package.
