About the Opportunity
Due to growth, we have an opportunity for a full-time Health and Safety Supervisor to join our team in Port Hope, Ontario
This field position is primarily responsible for coordinating compliance with health and safety requirements on environmental remediation projects as defined by Company standards, governmental regulations, and contractual obligations. This position may oversee loss prevention in concurrent projects or projects of a complex nature. This is an important role that drives the operation towards ownership of best practices and behaviours for a secure, safe, and healthy work environment.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinating the implementation of Accident Prevention Plans (APP) and overseeing the completion of Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) preparation and acceptance
- Actively promoting and supporting the health and safety programs at project sites
- Leading health and safety training for Company staff, subcontractors, and any parties required to participate to ensure the achievement of exceptional health & safety standards including developing training content
- Authoring health and safety-related documentation (reports, logs, and records), completing required information for daily reports and client communications in a timely and accurate manner
- Ensuring that all documentation is organized and uploaded to the project portal
- Providing guidance to subcontractors, clients, and project team members to ensure that, project activities are completed according to applicable health and safety plan(s)
- Conducting regular inspections to assess health and safety plan adherence as well as identifying potential loss and risk
- Taking appropriate actions to prevent loss and mitigate risk in accordance with company standards and practices
- Ensuring that shortcomings are corrected in a timely manner and to acceptable measures as well as conducting related investigations thoroughly, and completing associated documentation accurately.
- Representing the Company in a positive and professional manner in client and regulatory agency interactions
- Reporting health and safety incidents to the Company Incident Database
- Verifying implementation of corrective actions, tracking and analyzing them, and communicating and documenting them
- Supervising and mentoring Health & Safety Technicians as well as reviewing the qualifications of subcontractors
- Collaborating with Quality Control counterparts to ensure coordination between areas of responsibility
About You
To qualify, you will need progressive work experience in a position directly related to health and safety on environmental or construction projects. A Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation, at minimum, is required or must be obtained upon hire. A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Health & Safety or related field is also required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for this requirement.
The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:
- The ability to get a Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) security clearance upon hire
- Documented proof of lawful presence required for CNL security clearance (5 years)
- Work knowledge of applicable Canadian and Ontario regulations
- An aptitude for exercising independent thinking and reasoning
- Demonstrated success in teaching others health and safety concepts and requirements
- Knowledge of contract compliance in government construction or environmental projects (NAVFAC, USACE, AFCEE as well as federal regulations)
- Successful track record in effectively engaging with subcontractors
- Competent in using Microsoft Office products, email systems, and Windows
- Previous success in working effectively in a dotted-line reporting structure
- Hands-on experience in industrial hygiene monitoring and use of hazardous work permits
- Experience in environmental remediation projects and working with radiation
- Completion of Ontario General Contractors Association ‘Safety Pass’ Course
- Ontario Regulation 297/13 Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness in 5 Steps
