Proficiency Testing & Quality Control Specialist, Laboratory Medicine

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the manager, laboratory medicine, the proficiency testing and quality control specialist’s responsibilities are the coordination and management of the laboratory medicine proficiency testing (PT) program and the pulmonary function quality control (QC) program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • collect, analyze and ensure appropriate follow up for the laboratory medicine PT program
  • monitor PT and QC performance of client organizations and ensure appropriate follow-up
  • develop summary reports of the individual performance of client organizations as part of the laboratory medicine accreditation pre-survey process
  • consult with the laboratory medicine advisory committee members to confirm which procedures will have mandated PT programs as a requirement for accreditation
  • develop and maintain a current profile for each proficiency testing provider
  • create and distribute DAP PT procedures and forms each year
  • update reporting criteria for PT outliers
  • consult with the pulmonary function advisory committee members to confirm the parameters and procedures that are to be part of the ongoing QC practices
  • manage receipt of data and reports, and review and distribute final reports to pulmonary function facilities
  • develop summary reports of the performance of client organizations as part of the laboratory medicine proficiency testing program and the pulmonary function quality control program
  • supports the DAP internal auditing process

Other duties

  • participate in DAP-related educational activities and conferences
  • organize meetings, forums, focus groups and workshops
  • attend meetings and functions at the direction of the manager, laboratory medicine
  • perform related duties as assigned

DECISION-MAKING

  • monitor PT and QC performance of client organizations and ensure appropriate follow-up
  • collect and analyze data for the purpose of providing ongoing PT and QC reports

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • maintain current knowledge and monitor technological change, trends and best practices in the area of responsibility
  • inform the manager, laboratory medicine of any quality, safety or other risk issues related to PT or QC activities
  • ensure that any potential hazards and risks to clients and/or staff are recognized and minimized
  • participate in the improvement activities for quality and safety processes provided through the DAP quality improvement program
  • follow the policies and procedures of the DAP and the College
  • provide timely reports as required

SKILL AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required skills and qualifications include:

  • graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related diagnostic health discipline
  • five years’ experience working in a clinical and/or diagnostic setting
  • three years’ experience coordinating or managing a quality control program in a clinical setting
  • experience in data collection, review, synthesis, qualitative and quantitative/statistical analysis of data, literature and other sources of information
  • completion of a program and/or courses in quality management from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • current registration in an appropriate diagnostic discipline
  • exceptional client service skills
  • evaluation and critical thinking skills
  • facilitation of large groups
  • excellent communication skills, written and oral
  • ability to deliver education and orientation programs utilizing a variety of recognized adult education methodologies
  • professional and business-like manner
