About the Opportunity

ʔaq̓am is hiring a Principal for the ʔaq̓amnik̓ Elementary School. The principal will contribute the educational perspective to the development and implementation of the Community Strategic Plan and the Community Education goal: “Achieving excellence through learning, based on individual strengths, passions and potential.” 

The principal is responsible for the administration and oversight of the ʔaq̓amnik̓ Elementary School, out-of-school programs, and student transportation services.  This position is responsible for achieving the goals related to education set out in the strategic plan, education guidelines, and guided by ʔaq̓am mission, goals, and values. The Principal oversees and evaluates all teaching, and consistently monitors the learning environment and its impact on student success.

Your key responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Ensure alignment of curricula, instructional practices, student needs, and assessments amongst all classrooms meeting guidelines and standards.
  • Understand, communicate, and encourage the use of current educational research and practices.
  • Ensure Community values, culture, language, and concepts are embedded throughout the school, curriculum, and classrooms.
  • Liaise with Director of Education and Learning to ensure Community Education goals are being met. Attend all necessary meetings which may include, but is not limited to: Education meetings, Chief and Council meetings, PAC, Education Jurisdiction etc.
  • Manage and provide leadership and mentorship to the ʔaq̓amnik’ school staff and related programming; coordinating with each staff member in the development of their individual work plans as well as the school’s overall plan and assigning the team’s daily activities and tasks and provide ongoing training and support to teachers and employees.
  • Develop and implement programs, processes, etc. aimed at achieving goals related to education set out in the strategic plan. Consistently work towards achieving the Mission and Vision of ʔaq̓am and recognize achievement of goals.

More About You

  • Minimum Bachelor of Education Degree or equivalent combined with extensive knowledge of school administration. 
  • Valid B.C. Teaching Certificate (incorporates criminal record check).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar position at a Senior Level role.
  • Proven proficiency in human resource, project, and budget management.
  • Experience working in a First Nation environment is an asset.
  • Experience working with individuals with Special Needs is an asset.
  • Completion of and possession of valid CPR and First Aid Certificate.

Salary will commensurate with experience from a range ($82,177-115,00) and includes a favorable benefits package and pension plan.
