About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Land Code Advisor, the Lands Clerk is responsible for supporting the implementation and administration of the ʔaq̓am Amended Land Code, according to natural law and qanikitȼi (ʔaq̓am values and principles) for the use and benefit of all ʔaq̓amnik̓ (ʔaq̓am people present and future generations). This position supports and collaborates with other staff within the Lands and Natural Resources Department, including the Director of Lands and Natural Resources and the Director of Facilities and Infrastructure, playing an important role in the development and implementation of the ʔaq̓am Strategic Plan.

Your key responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Implementation of ʔaq̓am Laws, Plans, and Policies

    • Support the development and implementation of projects in accordance with the ʔaq̓am Community Strategic Plan and the ʔaq̓am laws and policies 
    • Ensure land instruments are recorded in an accurate and timely manner within the First Nations Lands Registry.
    • Track and maintain accurate records of lands instruments.
    • Compliance checks for ʔaq̓am’s permits, leases, and licenses under ʔaq̓am Land Code and policies.  
    • Process, track, and issue annual ʔaq̓am hunting permits in collaboration with the Lands Committee.
    • Prepare Lands Committee meeting agenda packages and record meeting minutes.
    • Create cheque requisitions, invoices, and community notices as assigned. 
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Membership Relations

    • Plan, organize and facilitate engagement with members through Community Meetings (virtual or in-person).
    • Help ʔaq̓amnik̓ interpret and complete forms within the Lands Management Manual.
    • Respond to inquiries related to ʔaq̓am Amended Land Code.
    • Deep involvement in community engagement and updating the ʔaq̓am laws and policies, including but not limited to, the Land Use Plan.

More About You

The following are required:

    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract
    • Access to reliable transportation to travel within the ʔaq̓am Community and Cranbrook area
    • Ability to undergo a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check

Our ideal candidate will possess the following: 

  • 2 years experience in a similar role.
  • Minimum Diploma in Planning, Public Administration, Policy, Resource Management (e.g. forestry, ecology, natural resources, etc.) or other relevant field.
  • Completion of Aboriginal Culture Training, training in engagement and consultation, and/or Aboriginal rights and title training/workshops is an asset.
  • Previous experience working for a First Nation is an asset.
  • Training and experience with GIS Mapping is an asset.

Salary will commensurate with experience from a range $58,000 - $75,000 and includes a favorable benefits package and pension plan.
