About the Opportunity

The Land Code Advisor is responsible for managing the planning, implementation and administration of the ʔaq̓am Amended Land Code, according to natural law and qanikitȼi (ʔaq̓am values and principles) for the use and benefit of all ʔaq̓amnik̓ (ʔaq̓am people present and future generations). A major function of this position is to facilitate the development of laws, policy and procedure arising from ʔaq̓am Amended Land Code. This position is critical in in achieving goals and objectives as set out in ka kniⱡwitiyaⱡa.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for law approval processes under ʔaq̓am Land Code as directed by Chief and Council.
  • Ensures organizational compliance with ʔaq̓am Amended Land Code.
  • Researches and stays informed of pertinent information and developments in areas such as First Nation Environmental Protection laws and regulations and or Canadian Environmental Protection laws and regulations.
  • Works closely with Staff, Leadership and the Lands Committee to communicate Land Code development initiatives and lead Community engagement and consultation efforts.
  • Works collaboratively with external partners to implement Land Code initiatives. Partners may include (but are not limited to): Lands Advisory Board Resource Centre, Indigenous Services Canada, the Ktunaxa Nation Council and other Land Code communities.
  • Drafts leases, permits, licenses, easements and right-of-ways to support ʔaq̓am and ʔaq̓amnik̓ operated initiatives.
  • Helps ʔaq̓amnik̓ interpret and complete forms within the Lands Management Manual.
  • Ensure land instruments are recorded in an accurate and timely manner within the First Nations Lands Registry.
  • Provides, as required, communications to ʔaq̓amnik̓ as specified under Land Code.
  • Represent the interests of ʔaq̓am in the negotiation and drafting of lease/license/permits/easement agreements where ʔaq̓am is the leaser, permitter, etc.

More About You

The successful candidate holds a minimum of a Bachelors and/or Masters in Planning, Land/Resource Management, Law, Public Administration, Policy or a related field with 3 years’ experience in a similar role, implementing and monitoring strategic plans, policy and law development and land and resource development is preferred.  Project management experience would be an asset as well as demonstrated knowledge of Ktunaxa/Indigenous people and Ktunaxa/Indigenous culture.  We are seeking a strategic, analytical thinker with a Community focused approach who will take initiative to prioritize multiple projects with a high degree of ethics, confidentiality and integrity.  You must have a clear Criminal Record and provide proof of such as well as provision of a clean driver’s abstract and a Valid Class 5 license. 

Salary will commensurate with experience from a range ($78,000 to $111,000 per year) and includes a favorable benefits package and pension plan.
