The Student & Volunteer Lead supports the functions of the Learning & Development team and serves as a liaison between student / volunteer candidates and staff, re: volunteer opportunities and student placements or practicums. The Lead is responsible for providing support and direction as needed to leadership and employees on related matters, taking into consideration service area and individual needs, and balance those with the organization’s objectives. This role collaborates closely with Employee Experience, leadership, and employees on developing student / volunteer opportunities, onboarding and ongoing consultation, overseeing the student / volunteer management systems, communication to internal and external partners, and administrative tasks of the area

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Serves as a first point of contact for student & volunteer inquiries from individuals, educational institutions, and programs or service areas.
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts, programs, and service areas in developing suitable placements for students and volunteers based on needs of the service area and the student / volunteer.
  • Maintains strong relationships with programs and services throughout the organization, keeping up to date with changes in the needs of each area. • Conducts regular check-ins with service area contacts to ensure optimal delivery of services.
  • Collaborates with post-secondary institutions and the recruitment team on the recruitment of student placements and volunteers.
  • Develops innovative practices to continually improve the efficiencies of service area placements.
  • Conducts assessments on the fit between student / volunteer placements and service areas.
  • Gathers feedback from service areas, documents performance management issues, and collaborates with post-secondary institutions on the management of on-going performance concerns.
  • Demonstrates recognition of the value of the team, inspires, and engages with students and volunteers.
  • Acts as systems administrator for the Volunteer Management system, serving as a primary point of contact for users, administrators, and vendors.
  • Manages data entered in the Volunteer Management system.
  • Completes the full cycle of processing and database tracking for background check applications 

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience within the area of Human Resources, Recruitment, or Volunteer Management.
  • Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in Organizational Development, Human Resource Management, Social Sciences (or a related field) from a recognized post-secondary institution. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Volunteer Management or Adult Education certification is considered an asset.
  • A demonstrated awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures and traditions
  • Excellent customer service abilities; sensitivity to customer issues and understanding the importance of diplomacy and confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Fluency in American Sign Language is considered an asset. 
  • A full Driver's License with access to a vehicle is considered an asset

The salary range for this full-time, 70-hour biweekly position is $23.63 to $30.71 per hour, dependent upon education and/or experience. A full benefits package (which includes Health and Dental Benefits, Long Term Disability Benefits, and Pension Plan) is provided to regular full-time staff.
