About Ironworkers Union Local 97

Ironworkers Union Local 97 (Ironworkers Local 97) is a part of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworkers. Its area of coverage includes all of British Columbia, and the Yukon. Since 1906, Ironworkers Local 97 has fought to better the lives of Ironworkers through collective bargaining. Our mandate is to raise wages and working conditions for Ironworkers, and to ensure that Ironworkers receive the training they need to be safe, productive, and professional at work.

Ironworkers Local 97 is also committed to actively increasing the representation of women, minorities, and aboriginal people in the ironworking trade by offering ongoing training opportunities. Training programs available include: Fall Protection, Aerial work platform, WHIMIS, Confined Space, Site Ready BC, First Aid, Forklift training, Telehandler training, CWB Welding certifications, Foreman training, Shop Steward training, Superintendent training, Post tensioning training, entry level rebar bootcamps. Learning tools offered include online learning system for continued education and tutors for apprentices.

As an Apprentice Ironworker at BC Ironworkers Local 97, you will join an organization that represents over 1,800 men and women in BC's ironworking industry.

Do you want to work on exciting projects that Ironworkers Local 97 have worked on? Projects like the Patullo Bridge, Site C Dam, LNG Kitimat, Broadway Skytrain, Kicking Horse Bridge, Amazon Building, Halfway River Bridge, and BCIT Expansion?

Ironworkers are crucial in the construction industry, with valuable skill sets needed to work with steel, on projects that include commercial and industrial buildings, towers, bridges, erecting pre-engineered building, and stadiums. 

Your typical day as an Apprentice Ironworker, may include but are not limited to:

• Reading blueprints and specifications to lay out work
• Unloading and positioning steel units
• Erecting and installing scaffolding
• Transporting heavy metal pieces using cranes
• Building steel structural pieces and components
• Transforming metal pieces into functional elements for building construction

About You

As an Apprentice Ironworker, the following are essential to bring success to the role: 

• Great communication skills
• Ability to work as an individual or as part of a team
• Like to work with your hands in varying outdoor conditions
• Have great problem-solving skills
• In good physical condition for physically-demanding manual labour
• Have background using hand and power tools
• Ability to follow strict safety guidelines
• Ability to work at heights, and lift up to 25 kg

Other qualifications that we will consider as valuable assets:

• Prior experience in construction
• Training or background as a welder
• Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certification, or working towards one
• Occupational First Aid, Fall Protection, or SiteReadyBC training/certification
• High school diploma and/or completion of the Ironworker (Generalist) Foundation Program or Level 1 Ironworker (Generalist) training from an ITA recognized post-secondary institution in BC
• Valid BC driver’s license and reliable vehicle

About The Benefits

Per collective agreement, you will earn an hourly rate that ranges from $21.67 to $40.45, depending on the year of your apprenticeship and projects you will be involved in (commercial or industrial).  As you advance through the apprenticeship program, you will be increased at regular increments. Other benefits include:
