Position
Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Nunavut
Location and Reporting Structure
Reporting to the Chief Mine Engineer, this position will be a fly in- fly out 3x3 rotation based in Nunavut, Canada.
Responsibilities
- Implement the use of geotechnical and rock mechanics principles for surface and underground mine design including geotechnical data collection standards, rock strength parameters, slope and stope stability, ground support design, ground control monitoring, rock mass characterization, instrumentation monitoring, and other geotechnical data collection;
- Contribute to the mine planning process by conducting analysis and providing recommendations on ground stability by using numerical modelling and empirical design to predict mine performance;
- Provide geotechnical design support and evaluation of underwork excavations, pit walls, dumps, and site earthworks to ensure geotechnical stability and industry standards are achieved;
- Review geotechnical and mine designs to ensure geotechnical hazards are identified and ground support is prescribed with rock mechanics best practice methods;
- Manage and review underground excavation stability data collection, analysis, and rehab work; perform stability analysis of mine extraction sequences;
- Develop and implement geotechnical design criteria to support safe and optimal mine operations;
- Responsible for developing, implementing, updating, and ensuring operational adherence to the Ground Control Management Plan;
- Review mine plans to ensure geotechnical risk is addressed in all planning cycles;
- Forecast and order annual ground support requirements to be shipped on the winter ice road;
- Prepare scope of work documents and oversee the timely and accurate completion of external geotechnical studies performed by consultants;
- Assist with preparing geotechnical and mine design documentation to support external permitting and regulatory submissions;
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, influencing mine planning and operations by integrating advanced geotechnical considerations;
- Provide mentorship and guidance to mining engineers, geotechnical engineers, geologists, and management fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development;
- Contribute to cost-effective geotechnical solutions without compromising safety or environmental standards; and
- Ensure that all geotechnical engineering activities adhere to B2Gold’s safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and industry best practices.
Desired Competencies and Requirements
- Minimum eight (8) years ‘experience, preferably in a mining environment, and well versed in all aspects of geotechnical applications in either open pit or underground mining with exposure to geotechnical data analysis, site investigations, project evaluation and management;
- Six (6) years of Geotechnical Engineering experience in metals mining, including two (2) years of experience in overseeing the work of Engineers, Engineers in Training (EIT) and engineering technologist level staff;
- Familiarity with Deswik, Unwedge, Swedge, Slide, Dips, RS2, and RS3 considered an asset;
- Bachelor's degree in Geological, Geotechnical, Civil, or Mine Engineering (B.Eng); and
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation and membership in the Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist or ability to obtain same. Professional registration is mandatory;
Compensation and Benefits
For informational purposes, the starting annual Salary for the role is $160,000.00.
