The Story of Portuguese Cheese Company

For almost 60 years, Portuguese Cheese Company has been dedicated to crafting artisanal cheeses that reflect time-honoured traditions. The company was first founded in Kensington Market by an Azorean Cheesemaker who immigrated to Canada – having learned the art of cheesemaking from his father-in-law. The DeMelo family, whose roots also originate in the Azores, purchased the company in 1999 and carried on the dedication to crafting high quality cheeses using all natural, preservative-free ingredients. Today, the Portuguese Cheese Company is an award-winning cheese manufacturer, whose products can be found in every major banner and where their cheeses are celebrated for their authenticity and flavour by a wide variety of consumers. Rooted in ‘Old World’ methods and embraced by communities across Canada, our story is one of grit, heritage and pride. We don’t just make cheese – we carry on a legacy, one wheel at a time.
