About the Opportunity

Fall River Logging is growing! We are currently looking for an Operations Manager (Site Superintendent) to join our team in Port Alberni, B.C. This position is based mainly in office, with approximately 20% of time spent in the field visiting harvesting operations in and around the Port Alberni area. 

In this role, you will ensure the safe and efficient management of harvesting and log hauling operations in the Port Alberni area. You will be responsible for overseeing operational planning, employee management, labour relations, budgeting, and safety compliance, all while ensuring that customer requirements and company standards are met.

You possess a deep understanding of operational forest management with a strong focus on improving safety, quality, and efficiency. 

Your tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing safety leadership, training, incident analysis, and reporting requirements
  • Developing and communicating harvesting and productivity plans
  • Adhering to and guiding employee management in accordance with the United Steelworker Union 1-1937 Collective Agreement requirements
  • Ensuring adherence to environmental standards
  • Managing resources to ensure the company meets contractual obligations and utilization targets
  • Maximizing equipment utilization and seeking additional work opportunities where required
  • Conducting contract negotiations and accountability for cost and performance targets
  • Setting, tracking, and reporting on performance targets that align with the Meraki organizational goals
  • Creating and overseeing project budgets, ensuring financial alignment with company goals
  • Maintaining strong customer and stakeholder relationships and managing contractual obligations
  • Communicating productivity, safety, and planning with multiple stakeholders
  • Collaborating with the Maintenance Manager and supervisors to optimize equipment uptime and ensure adherence to the company’s equipment ownership strategy
  • Supporting the General Manager in strategic planning, budget development, and overall business growth

About You 

To qualify, you will need 3+ years of experience in the forest industry in an operational capacity with increasingly responsible roles or 8+ years in business, construction, or other relevant industries, including project management experience. 

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Understanding of coastal logging and forestry practices
  • Labour Relations experience
  • Proficiency with MS Office, particularly Excel
  • A proven track record of balancing cost control with quality
  • Good working knowledge of log flow process as well as crown land legislation and regulations in B.C.

Not required but considered an asset:

  • Post-secondary degree in Forestry or related degree 
  • Current accreditation or eligibility for accreditation with The Forest Professionals of B.C. Association
