About the Opportunity

Golden Bear Insurance Company has an exciting opportunity for full-time E&S Underwriters - Casualty roles based in Stockton, CA and Scottsdale, AZ.

Successful candidates will be able to select, price and set appropriate terms/conditions for brokerage commercial casualty risks. Candidates will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with brokers and facultative reinsurance underwriters, as well as sharing their industry knowledge and expertise with the other underwriters and support staff on the team.

This is a fast-paced unit, requiring the underwriters to work quickly and stay organized.  Use of analytical methods in underwriting is essential to success in this position.  Gathering data from disparate sources, assembling information, and analyzing the complete picture of each risk, and documenting files thoroughly are required.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Takes an active role in developing assigned brokers, builds on existing brokerage relationships to increase production sources and identify profitable market opportunities
  • Analyzes submissions to make decisions based on individual risk characteristics, exposure analysis, hazard recognition and controls
  • Following reinsurance treaty, underwriting guidelines and individual letter of authority to accept, reject, or modify new and renewal business to ensure a profitable book of business
  • Proper analysis of risk includes pre-qualifying the submission and obtaining all the needed information using all the in-house and outside sources of information to make a sound determination whether to move forward with the risk or decline
  • Ability to use creativity and underwriting knowledge to write risks and retain business within company underwriting guidelines
  • Fully document operations, loss history, pricing rationale, exposures, controls, pros & cons of the risk on the underwriting summary document
  • Communicates effectively and persuasively with brokers on underwriting issues including but not limited to decisions on cancellations, declinations, exposure concerns, and coverage approaches
  • Interfaces effectively with other business units within the Company
  • Ensure the use of best practices and compliance with all Company practices and policies
  • Promotes the Company’s products and services by actively seeking opportunities to speak at brokers or insurance-related groups, and by networking within the insurance community to stay abreast of changes within the industry
  • Provide backup assistance when the manager is out of the office by reviewing referrals and other questions and issues which may arise in the department

More About You

In order to qualify for this role, you must have a Bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of 5+ years of related experience, ideally in primary casualty or excess casualty brokerage.

  • Strong organizational skills with excellent written and oral communication abilities
  • Industry form knowledge and understanding

  • Excellent analytical, judgment, and promotional abilities
  • Ability to work under time constraints and in a high-volume, and fast-paced environment
  • Proven computer skills
  • Willingness and capacity to travel nationally as needed
