About the Opportunity

Currently, the Serpent River First Nation is looking for a General Manager to join our community on a full-time basis. 

As the General Manager of Serpent River First Nation Limited Partnership (SRFNLP), you will report directly to the Board of Directors. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing and leading all for-profit economic development initiatives, from conception to completion. The scope of this work includes tasks such as proposal writing, human resource management, financial management, production planning, sales planning, marketing, and distribution.

Working in a confidential environment, you will handle complex, sensitive, and time-critical communications. Moreover, you will be expected to respond to requests from the Chief and Council and work closely with three boards (SRFN LP, Agawa LP, and SRFNEDC).

More specifically your responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing financial data to measure productivity, goal achievement, and identifying areas for improvement
  • Establishing and implementing operational policies, goals, and objectives, while conferring with the Board of Directors and staff as necessary, ensuring adherence to all business policies and relevant administrative practices
  • Understanding, implementing, and enforcing the WSIB safety program, working in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and any other relevant legislation
  • Monitoring 3rd party suppliers/contractors to ensure efficient provision of services and supplies in accordance with contractual arrangements
  • Overseeing activities related to the manufacture, supply, sales, and marketing of products and services, determining the type and scope of products and setting pricing within budget guidelines
  • Managing the movement of finished products and materials in and out of the facility, updating job knowledge through educational opportunities and professional organizations
  • Enhancing the organization's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
  • Ensuring confidentiality and safekeeping of all business documents and records, maintaining a highly confidential environment for complex, sensitive, and urgent matters
  • Collaborating effectively with the Board of Directors, senior management, staff, and internal/external service providers
  • Mitigating internal issues among staff to promote better relationships and team building
  • Accepting responsibility for staff evaluation at scheduled times, sharing information according to privacy and confidentiality guidelines
  • Drafting and reviewing budgets and financial expenditures following policy and procedures
  • Maintaining accurate, up-to-date work files and board files, adhering to all business policies and procedures
  • Demonstrating behaviours, actions, and attitudes consistent with the corporation's vision, mission, and values
  • Managing and supervising staff, preparing work schedules, and assigning specific duties, while overseeing the interview, hiring, and training of new employees with other SRFNLP supervisory staff

More About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will need at least 3 years of experience working in a  business senior management or leadership position, with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field. Preference will be given to individuals who have worked with a First Nations community before.   

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • Experience with board reporting and working with a board of directors and executives 
  • Proficient computer skills including excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Sage 50 and experience with POS 
  • Proven ability to write funding proposals
  • Adherence to directives and completion of overlapping projects with excellent organizational, time management, and prioritizing abilities under tight deadlines
  • Efficiently handling a high and varied administrative workload on a daily basis
  • Implementation of company policies and procedures
  • Ability to speak Ojibway is preferred
  • Proven track record of outstanding communication skills, both in verbal and written form
  • A valid class G driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle and a clean driver's abstract
  • Must be able to provide a CPIC clear of any offences relating to theft and fraud

Additionally, you will have proven knowledge of Serpent River First Nation community, history, culture and people and a respect for Indigenous culture, customs, traditions, and issues. It is essential that you have strong Human Resource skills with the ability to manage, supervise, and provide support to staff in determining programs/services.
