AC Achievement Society is a private resource home for individual(s) who requires 24/7 supervision due to profound/complex Autism. The goal of the home is to provide a safe, happy, and engaging life for the resident(s) that includes community inclusion. This work makes a difference in the life of the resident and is a very rewarding career path for the right individual(s).
Note: Initially you will provide personalized care and support to a young adult woman with complex autism. As the residence plans to accommodate more residents in the future, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a growing community. The young woman, who is 19 years old, requires specialized care due to her complex needs. She is a joyful and active individual who enjoys spending time outdoors, especially in the pool area. Some of the responsibilities include providing behavioural support, assisting with self-regulation, feeding, and helping with dressing. Community inclusion support is also important, as well as understanding her triggers, such as sensitivity to sounds. Building a rapport and getting to know her on a personal level is an essential aspect of this role. It is important to react appropriately during potential crisis situations, such as addressing fixation issues or anxiety. Redirection and the ability to switch focus are valuable skills. This role requires constant interaction and dedication, as you will play a vital role in her daily life.

About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Behavioural Support Specialist to join our team in or before mid-August 2023 on a full-time basis with most shifts being 2-1.
Reporting to the House Manager you will always be responsible for engaging resident(s) whether with an activity, assisting with daily life skills, meals, or just hanging out. There is more to a support worker than assisting with daily tasks in this resource home. They are friends and family to the resident(s). In addition to spending time outdoors, you will be expected to spend time indoors as well.
The scope of your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting resident(s) with complex autism in their daily activities, including personal care, meal preparation, and medication administration
- Supporting and encouraging them in developing and maintaining independent living skills
- Participating in the creation and implementation of personalized care plans for each resident, ensuring their unique needs and goals are being addressed
- Engaging in regular communication with the families of residents, providing updates on progress and discussing any concerns or changes in behaviour
- Accompanying and supervising residents during outings and community activities, promoting social engagement and inclusion
- Assisting with transportation needs, ensuring the safety and comfort of residents during travel.
- Creating a supportive and nurturing environment, fostering a sense of belonging and building positive relationships with residents
- Utilizing appropriate strategies and techniques to manage challenging behaviours and de-escalate potential crisis situations
- Encouraging and facilitating recreational activities and hobbies that align with their interests and abilities
- Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, including therapists and healthcare professionals, to provide coordinated and holistic care
- Monitoring and documenting the progress, behaviour patterns, and any changes in the physical or emotional well-being of residents
- Assisting with household chores, such as cleaning, laundry, and organizing, to maintain a safe and comfortable living environment
- Promoting and supporting the independence of residents in decision-making and self-advocacy
- Providing emotional support and being a reliable companion to residents, fostering trusting and supportive relationships
- Engaging in ongoing professional development and training to enhance knowledge and skills in supporting residents with complex autism
About You
To qualify, you will need to be a proactive individual with strong communication skills, proficiency in English and a passion for enhancing the lives of people with complex Autism. Experience working with developmental special needs (Autism) preferred, examples: behaviour interventionists, experienced EAs, experienced care aides or many years of childcare experience. A valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle/transportation that isn't public are required for this role (this is non-negotiable).
The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:
- Strong behavioural support skills, including de-escalation and crisis management
- Reliable, caring, and compassionate with a high level of empathy
- Finds joy in making a positive difference in people's lives
- Physically strong and able to keep up with active residents
- Willingness to put themselves in challenging situations to ensure residents' safety
- Creates a drama-free work environment and maintains a positive attitude
- Must be patient, kind, and respectful towards residents and colleagues
- Comfortable and able to engage and have fun with residents while prioritizing safety
- Must pass a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector consolidated check (takes up to 6 weeks to process so please plan accordingly)
- Fully vaccinated as per provincial health guidelines with up to date vaccination record
- Ability to follow behavioural support plans
- Food Safe – can be obtained if hired
- Basic Safety and First aid certificate – can be obtained if hired
