About the Opportunity

OVAC is seeking a Wetland Specialist to join our team. This position will be mainly based out of Calgary, Edmonton, or Grande Prairie, however travel throughout Alberta and British Columbia is expected based on project requirements.

This is a full-time position, although, alternative arrangements such as short-term contracts may be considered for the right person.

The Wetland Specialist’s day-to-day role will involve a combination of office and field work to complete environmental assessments, biophysical inventories, monitoring of environmental impacts during construction and any other relevant tasks.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting biophysical data collections (vegetation surveys, wetland assessments, ecosite classification) for informed environmental decision-making
  • Coordinating and leading fieldwork activities for accurate environmental assessments and monitoring
  • Maintaining professional correspondence, providing timely project updates for effective communication
  • Serving as a wetland consultant, providing expertise in assessment, delineation, and classification for comprehensive planning
  • Preparing, reviewing, and finalizing regulatory applications in compliance with Alberta Wetland Policy
  • Guiding and mentoring junior staff, enhancing their technical knowledge and growth
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to integrate wetland assessments into diverse projects, promoting sustainability
  • Conducting research, staying updated on wetland regulations, policies, and best practices
  • Developing strategies for wetland restoration, conservation, and mitigation to minimize environmental impacts
  • Participating in stakeholder engagement, fostering collaboration and cultural sensitivity in wetland management

About You

To qualify, you will need the following:

  • At least 5 years experience as a Wetland Specialist
  • P.Biol designation in Alberta or the ability to obtain one (set by the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists or APSB); or an RPBio designation in BC or the ability to obtain one
  • bachelor's degree or higher in a field of biology or a related discipline (e.g., General Biology, Environmental Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Plant Biology, etc.)
  • Ability to sign Wetland Regulatory documents as an Authentication Wetland Specialist in Alberta
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with no restrictions
  • Has or willing to obtain First Aid – Level C

To successfully perform this role, the following attributes will be highly valuable:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to safely lift and carry 30lbs 
  • Adaptability to work in diverse weather conditions and on rugged/steep terrain
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed for project assignments
  • Environmental project management background (asset)
