About the Opportunity

We currently have exciting full-time opportunities for an Assistant Engineer and
an Associate Engineer to join our team in Millbrae, San Mateo County.

As an Assistant Engineer, your key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Managing the encroachment permit system, including issuing encroachment permits, conducting inspections, and coordinating with residents and contractors

  • Designing and preparing engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, meeting minutes, progress payments, change orders, and other related documents for public works projects including streets, street lighting, traffic signals, parks and recreation facilities, storm, sanitary sewer, and water systems, parking facilities, and other structures; assisting in and preparing preliminary design studies

  • Preparing and compiling engineering and special reports and recommendations

  • Serving as project management for a variety of capital improvement and/or construction projects, with duties that include running weekly meetings and coordinating technical personnel, outside engineering firms, and other public agencies; identifying problem areas and developing alternative solutions

  • Reviewing subdivision and construction plans for conformance to City standards;
    checking for adequacy of design, traffic geometrics, hydraulics, grading, cost estimates, soils reports, and other factors; preparing property descriptions and performing right-of-way work

  • Receiving and conducting investigations of complaints and public inquiries related to the work, responding in person, over the phone, and in writing

As an Associate Engineer, your key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conferring with inspectors and private engineers/builders on technical details of contract construction of public works projects

  • Receiving, supervising, or personally conducting investigations of complaints

  • Planning, designing, reviewing, and preparing detailed engineering plans, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, contracts, and related documents for public works projects

  • Reviewing project estimates and project information obtained from various public
    records

  • Administering major public works construction and repair projects from conceptualization to filing of the notice of completion

  • Reviewing and checking parcel, subdivision, and condominium maps, construction plans, deeds, property descriptions, master plans, and improvement plans for accuracy of calculations, compliance with design criteria, special conditions, and City standards

  • Conducting plan reviews and field inspections of public works facilities and
    improvements planned, designed, and installed by developers/contractors for
    compliance with City codes

  • Serving as staff to City commissions and committees, and preparing and presenting City
    Council reports as assigned

More About You

To qualify for the Assistant Engineer, you must have the following:

Education: Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, from a
recognized college or university

Experience: 2 years in professional civil engineering work involving engineering design, plan checking, and project management

Licenses: An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certificate. Possession of a valid Class C
California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
 
To qualify for the Associate Engineer, you must have the following:

Education: Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, from a
recognized college or university

Experience: 4 years experience of professional engineering experience, including 2+
years as an Assistant Engineer

Licenses: A Professional Engineer status issued by the State of California. Possession
of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record

About the Benefits

You will earn the following annual salary range depending on education and experience:

  • Assistant Engineer - $90,357 - $121,982
  • Associate Engineer - $98,152 - $132,505 

Both positions enjoy the following benefits

1) Leave accruals

  • 11 days (88 hours) national holidays observed per year
  • 40 hours Floating holiday leave per year
  • 40 hours Management leave per year
  • 14 hours General leave per month (21 days/year); General leave accrual goes up with years of service
  • Maximum accumulation of accrued leave is 1,040 hours (6 months)

2) Health Coverage

  • $2,188.15/mo medical allowance towards CalPERS health plans in 2023
  • $572/mo cash stipend for opting out of health coverage (proof of health coverage is required)
  • Up to $300/mo cash stipend for selecting employee-only or employee+1 coverage
  • You are still eligible for Dental and Vision coverage even if you opt out of Health
    coverage

3) Dental coverage

  • City Paid Ameritas PPO plan through The Standard for employee, spouse, and
    dependent children up to age 26
  • $2,000 annual maximum for each covered member
  • Max Builder benefit

4) Vision coverage

  • City Paid VSP Choice plan for employee, spouse, and dependent children up to age 26

5) CalPERS

  • CalPERS retirement formula of 2.7% @ 55 for classic members or 2% @ 62 for PEPRA
    (new) members
  • Employee contribution is 13.5% for classic members or 7.25% for PEPRA members

6) Other Benefits
