About the Opportunity

The County of Simcoe currently has an opportunity for an Engineering Technician II (Inside), Roads and Engineering to join our team in our Midhurst, ON office on a full-time basis. This is a flexible hybrid position!

As a valued member of the Transportation and Engineering team, you will conduct engineering reviews such as environmental assessments, traffic control, stormwater management, road design, infrastructure design, property acquisitions, utility installations and construction inspection.

Typical days will include activities related to:

  • Engineering investigations for stormwater management, infrastructure, traffic control, and corresponding records
  • Investigating, reviewing and commenting on adjustment applications, site plans, official plans and amendments, zoning by-laws and entrances, engineering drawings, environmental assessments, and utility installations
  • Interacting with contractors, consultants, applicants, and the public and municipal roads staff for consultation and problem resolution, as well as interpreting and advising on County policies, by-laws and guidelines
  • Inspecting road construction projects, including field inspections of sites, entrances and surrounding lands
  • Attending and preparing for hearings of the Ontario Municipal Board
  • Providing research and data compilation, writing reports, making recommendations, presenting
  • Maintaining records on applications, engineering drawings, land acquisitions, ownership inquiries, road construction projects, and more

More About You

To qualify for this role, you will need a diploma or degree from a Community College or University program in Civil Engineering or a related Technology program and at least 2 years of experience in stormwater design, road design and road construction. 

Our ideal candidate will join us with:

  • An understanding of the basic principles of land use, planning, and transportation engineering
  • Ability to analyze the interrelationship between land use planning and transportation engineering considerations, in order to provide conclusions and recommendations regarding engineering submissions and applications
  • Knowledge of provincial legislation, policies and regulations under the Planning Act, Municipal Act, Drainage Act, and legislation related to road and drainage construction, as well as Traffic Engineering principles and Traffic Control layout, OPSS, OPSD, and Ontario Traffic Manual standards
  • Computer skills, including AutoCAD, Volo View, ArcMap, Microsoft Word, and Excel;
  • A Class G Ontario driver's licence in good standing and access to a reliable vehicle to use on corporate business
  • Eligibility for membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Technicians and Technologists
