About the Organization
Created in 2008 and privately held, Harmac Pacific Pulp operates a Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp mill on the east coast of Vancouver Island near Nanaimo, BC. Nanaimo Forest Products (NFP) Ltd., the owner of the Harmac Pacific trademark, restarted the mill with a single production line on October 3, 2008. Since that time the mill has grown to two production lines and a capacity of 380,000 tonnes of world-class pulp per year.
Key to Harmac’s success is the employee ownership model. Our employees are very active participants in the running of the business and have 2 members that they appoint to the company’s 6 seats on its Board of Directors.
The future of Harmac Pacific Pulp is looking bright. Through extensive capital investments, the organization has made significant improvements to productivity and reliability. In addition, as of 2013, the installation has been complete of a 25 MW Green Energy turbo-generator which we currently use to sell power to BC Hydro.

About the Opportunity
Harmac Pacific currently has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Safety and Training Supervisor to join our team in Nanaimo, B.C.
Reporting to the Head of Human Resources, the successful candidate is accountable for the Safety, Training, Disability Management, and Emergency Response functions of the company. You will provide integral support to HR while providing advice, guidance, and service to management with respect to injury prevention, WorkSafe BC regulation applications and interface, disability claims management, training & development, first aid & security services, and emergency preparedness and response.
Specifically, some of your duties will include:
- Coordinating the Injury Prevention Program and providing support for Managers, Superintendents, and Supervisors in the administration of the program
- Overseeing regulatory compliance requirements under WorkSafe BC regulations
- Coordinating training requirements for the hourly workforce and advising on succession planning to maintain effective manning levels and working closely with the Training Coordinator
- Managing the disability programs including WI, LTD, & WorkSafe BC
- Co-chairing the WI Committee and overseeing the administration of the WI Plan
- Providing supervision and direction of the First Aid & Security Department, along with overseeing plant security to ensure the protection of people and property
- Developing and maintaining emergency response policies, procedures, and training
- Assisting the Leadership Team in the development, interpretation, and implementation of Company policies related to Injury Prevention, Training & Development, and Emergency Response
- Chairing the Occupational Health & Safety Committee and participating in departmental safety meetings
- Being a key member of and providing ongoing support as required to the Human Resource team
To qualify for this role, you should have a post-secondary degree, diploma, or certification in a similar field with a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience. You must also be extremely organized, and an astute decision-maker with the ability to work well independently, and as part of a team.
You are an independent self-starter, with strong interpersonal and communication skills. In addition, you are highly organized and adaptable to changes in the work environment. Along with your qualifications, you will be a proven team player who is excited about contributing to the business as a whole.
