About the Opportunity

With exciting growth ahead, we are looking for a full-time Mechanical Estimator to join our team in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Reporting to the General Manager of Piping, you will be responsible for supporting all phases of the project life-cycle, including: identifying opportunities, tendering, front-end planning, execution, and close out. 

This role involves working on a variety of commercial and industrial projects (ranging from the tens of thousands to multi-millions), and involves tasks such as analyzing costs, planning and scheduling, monitoring progress, and handling project changes. 

Your main duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Compiling, analyzing, and completing tender documents for review and submission
  • Reviewing request for proposals (RFP) issued by clients
  • Developing subcontract, proposal, and estimating strategies
  • Ensuring estimates align with execution and cost management requirements
  • Interpreting documentation, specifications, and drawings using technical experience
  • Preparing detailed, accurate estimates through quantity take-offs, equipment, and labour rates for tender verification
  • Reviewing and evaluating vendor and subcontractor quotes
  • Attending and participating in site-visits, pre-bid, and post-bid meetings
  • Establishing and maintaining vendor and subcontractor relationships
  • Reviewing final estimate packages for accuracy and completeness
  • Communicating successful tender information and contract changes to the operations team and setting delivery plan
  • Completing bid certifications before submitting tender documentation
  • Supporting both site and office requirements
  • Completing project close outs
  • Performing other operational duties as needed

About You

To qualify, you will need 5 years of combined experience that include estimating and field background in mechanical, pipefitting, HVAC, sprinkler-fitting, and/or plumbing, preferably in commercial and industrial construction. Experience in civil, structural, or other divisions would be an asset.

To successfully perform, the following will be essential:

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, process, control drawings, and single-line drawings
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Project
  • Knowledge working with estimating software/CAO
  • Solutions-focused mindset and strong analytical thinking
  • Background in operating a safe, efficient, and productive work environment
  • Valid driver's license

In addition, the following will be considered valuable assets:

  • Technical diploma from a recognized institute, or a degree in mechanical or engineering
  • Journeyperson ticket in plumbing or pipefitting
  • Background working with a mechanical contractor
  • Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) experience
  • Knowledge of other construction trades

As our ideal candidate, you are a self-starter able to work independently with minor supervision. You are highly organized and can work simultaneously in multiple projects, as well as prioritizing tasks with competing deadlines. You have exceptional communication skills and are able to build and nurture relationships with people inside and outside the organization (e.g., tradespeople, clients, vendors, etc.).
