About the Opportunity

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Payroll Specialist to join our team in Delta, BC on a permanent, full-time basis. This is a hybrid role with a mix of working from home and from Boundary Bay airport in Delta, with a training period taking place fully in office.

The successful candidate is responsible for processing payroll for hourly employees including new hires, terminations, payroll adjustment, reclassifications, and full cycle payroll for union staff. The Payroll Specialist works collaboratively as a member of the Human Resources team, as well as working closely with the Financial Department to provide administrative support to the management team.

More specifically, your main duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilizing various methods, practices, and principles of preparing, calculating, and processing all aspects of payroll including activities relating to hourly wages, salaries, leaves, year-end reconciliation, as well as monthly reporting
  • Utilizing knowledge of Federal and Provincial government legislation and regulations, and union agreement(s) related to wage and benefits administration, Human Resources employment, and labor relations best practices
  • Preparing and balancing period-end reports and reconciling issued payroll reports to bank statements
  • Maintaining and updating benefits records
  • Streamlining timesheet and payroll system
  • Ensuring audit awareness and compliance are in line with the appropriate Labour standards and MTU standards
  • Compiling with the regulatory standards and policies and procedures of payroll
  • Researching payroll issues/discrepancies, and processing necessary corrections
  • Providing backup for the Compensation and Benefit Specialist

More About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will need 5-7 years of experience in payroll practices within an unionized environment, ideally with strong knowledge of ADP Workforce Now. In addition, you will need a post-secondary degree in Business Administration, Accounting, HR, or in a related field. A Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification with the Canadian Payroll Association is a strong asset. Experience in Accounting or Human Resources are considered assets; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

As our ideal candidate, you have a strong understanding of the financial and accounting implications of payroll transactions, with advanced Microsoft Excel and Word skills. You possess the ability to liaise with a variety of stakeholders in a courteous and tactful manner, with superior communication and interpersonal skills. You are able to work well both as a member of a team and independently, with the ability to apply discretion to sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.
