About the Opportunity
Gemco Construction currently has exciting opportunities for Heavy Equipment Operators to join our team based in Langley, B.C. on a full-time basis. The successful candidates will be working on sites throughout the Lower Mainland.
As our new Heavy Equipment Operator, you'll be responsible for operating excavators during construction and related activities to excavate, move, lift, strip, stockpile, and place earth, rock, gravel, or other materials. Excavators are used along with other heavy equipment to trench for utility installation. The successful candidates are also responsible for preparing their equipment for transportation, conducting pre-operational checks on their equipment before each shift, and post-operational checks at the end of each shift for cleaning and oiling.
More specifically, your responsibilities will include:
- Operating heavy equipment machinery safely and effectively, and performing inspections to ensure equipment is well-maintained and safe to use
- Excavating trenches and ditches, maintaining wall slope based on soil type and conditions, engineer’s specifications, or jurisdictional regulations and legislation
- Separating material in preparation for backfilling (frost lumps, rocks, finer materials)
- Protecting piping or utilities by applying backfill techniques and procedures such as covering with suitable material
- Stripping overburden, excavating to grade, and loading trucks
- Inspecting engine compartment for maintenance items such as engine oil level, belts, hoses, debris build-up, coolant, and exhaust system according to manufacturers’ checklist
- Performing walk-around inspection of overall machine for damage, unnecessary wear, leakage, and fluid levels such as hydraulic, swing gear, and fuel
- Filling out daily equipment logbook during pre-operational inspection according to company policy and jurisdictional regulations
More About You
In order to qualify for this role, you'll need at least 5 years of experience operating excavators, preferably in the land development and municipal sector, along with a valid Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle. As this role will focus primarily on site preparation and excavation, installation of underground utilities (such as sewer, water, electrical, and telecommunications), roadworks, retaining walls, erosion and sediment control systems, related experience is highly preferred. A competency certification from the Industry Training Association or a similar organization is an asset, but not required.
As our ideal candidate, you’ll possess strong communication skills and demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills. You are reliable and collaborative, with a willingness to learn and assist in other project areas as needed. You must be a mechanically-inclined self-starter with the ability to work effectively as part of a team and individually. In addition, you must be willing to travel to job sites and work outside while exposed to weather elements.
Above all, your strong interpersonal skills will combine with your technical knowledge and experience to ensure your success in this role.
