Since 2016, the Cochrane Women’s Emergency Society, operating as Big Hill Haven (“BHH”), has been working in Cochrane and the surrounding area to support families impacted by domestic abuse. We are committed to ending the cycle of abuse and violence by raising awareness through prevention, intervention, and education. As the result of an increase in demand for our services, we are looking to expand our team in order to lead the Society in building more capacity and enhancing our impact in the communities we serve.

About the Opportunity
Big Hill Haven currently has an opportunity for an enthusiastic Executive Director to join our team on a full-time basis. This role is based in Cochrane, AB, with an option to work remotely.
As our new Executive Director, you will perform the functions assigned by the Alberta Societies Act and in accordance with the bylaws of BHH, subject to the authority of the Board. The Executive Director is responsible for the operational management of all aspects of the Society’s business, as well as working with the Board to assist in planning the overall strategy for the Society. The Executive Director will operate under executive limitations policies as approved by the Board.
In this role, you will provide day-to-day leadership and support the Program Director in services development and delivery, while overseeing staff hiring, compensation, development, and evaluation. You will provide oversight regarding the financial functions of the organization and take an active role in fund development and donor relations, asset and risk management, government compliance, and community/sector relations. The Executive Director ensures that the vision, mission, and values of BHH are always followed and works with the Board to update the organization’s strategic plan on an annual basis and work to prepare and present the information at scheduled Board meetings.
More About You
In order to qualify for this role, you will need at least 5-10 years of experience ideally in not-for-profit administration, with experience in a senior leadership role, and possess a relevant university degree in a related field (economics, business administration, social work, or psychology). A combination of education and experience will also be considered.
As our ideal candidate, you'll take ownership and responsibility by demonstrating excellent leadership ability, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. You have well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to work independently and in a team environment. You have experience building relationships and managing the expectations of all stakeholders, with strong attention to detail and the ability to make timely and rational decisions under pressure. Proficiency in the Microsoft Suite of products is required.
Some strong assets to have would be: a background in social services (specifically in family violence and domestic abuse), experience in donor relations and fund development including grant writing, background in human resources, experience with accreditation and certification processes, awareness of risk management, private sector management experience, or small business ownership with profit and loss (P&L) responsibility.
