About Bella Bella, BC

The village of Bella Bella can be found on the east coast of Campbell Island, on the Central Coast region of British Columbia, approximately 180 kilometers north of Port Hardy and 145 kilometres west of Bella Coola. Ideal for any outdoor enthusiast, the area boasts the natural splendour of the Great Bear Rainforest, as well as a range of outdoor activities including fishing, kayaking, camping and whale watching.

The largest community on the Central Coast north of Queen Charlotte Strait, Bella Bella has a population of around 1,450 and is also home to the Heiltsuk First Nation. Despite its remote location, the community is provided access to a regional airport, BC Ferries terminal, regional hospital, regional RCMP detachment, public dock, grocery store, post office, fuel station, fish plant, forestry company, freight company, cable-vision and telecommunications infrastructure, Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue (SAR) facility, as well as a number of bed & breakfast establishments, restaurants and small shops.

This is a truly unique opportunity for someone to immerse themselves in a traditional First Nations community while enjoying the pristine beauty of BC’s Central Coast. Although ground transportation to Bella Bella is unavailable, BC Ferries services and regular, scheduled flights are in operation year-round.

About the Opportunity

The Hailika’as Heiltsuk Health Centre has an exciting opportunity for a Child and Youth Development Counsellor to join our team in Bella Bella, British Columbia, on a full-time basis.

Reporting directly to the Community Wellness Program Team Leader, you will provide individual and group counselling to child and youth members but also design and facilitate support groups.

Your responsibilities will include:    

  • Scheduling counselling sessions
  • Being actively involved in intervention with child and families experiencing crisis
  • Developing intervention strategies in consultation with the program supervisor and counselling team
  • Maintaining counselling caseloads, building on the support of existing health, social service, and education workers in the field, and working with other professionals in an integrated case management model
  • Designing, developing, and facilitating support groups and workshops as needed
  • Participating in professional meetings, conferences, and continuing education courses
  • Actively participating in community development initiatives
  • Working directly with suicidal or dangerous individuals, and working irregular hours in emergency or crisis intervention

More About You

Our ideal candidate will have a Bachelors's or Master's degree in social work, psychology, counselling, or in another relevant field, along with a Registered Clinical Counsellor certificationYou will also need to be eligible to register with the BC Association of Clinical CounsellorsPrevious experience in counselling and working with First Nations communities would be an asset. 

In order to succeed in this role, you will have competencies in assessment, service planning, and short-term counselling strategies. You have an understanding of and sensitivity to local native history, culture, and issues, with an appreciation of the role that culture plays in the treatment of psychological concerns. You possess excellent computer literacy skills, written and oral communication ability, and previous experience in crisis intervention.

As our new Child and Youth Development Counsellor, you have strong interpersonal skills and a genuine interest in working with people. You will do well in this role if you demonstrate sobriety, stability, integrity, and a supportive attitude. 

Please note that due to the nature of this role, you will be required to produce evidence of a criminal record check. Similarly, you will have some flexibility to work a modified schedule based on the needs of clients.
